Andrew Schulz Calls Out Anthony Jeselnik for Whining About Comedy

‘He used to be a big comic. People would like his jokes’

Andrew Schulz has a theory about comedians. If you’re primarily known for your hot takes about comedy versus your actual comedy, you’re not doing it right. “None of these motherfuckers that talk about comedy are funny,” he said on a recent Flagrant podcast. “If people know you for your opinions about comedy and not your jokes, you’re probably not funny. Simple as that.”

Case in point: Anthony Jeselnik. “Now it’s like the only time you ever see anything about Jeselnick,” whined Schulz, “he’s whining about comics.”

“I’ve never heard him say a positive thing about another comic that’s not himself,” chimed in cohost Akaash Singh

“That’s the only thing he can get attention for,” Schulz said. “It’s got to break his fucking heart. Like he used to be a big comic. People would like his jokes.”

“No matter what the joke is, you’re like where’s this going?” said Singh, piling on. “Oh, a baby died.”

“No,” Schulz said. “The baby gets AIDS. Let me guess, Anthony — does the baby get AIDS?”

“Twenty-five years of that? I didn’t see it coming,” laughed Singh.

Jeselnik wasn’t the only target of the Flagrant blowtorch. The podcasters also went after comedians who criticized those who participated in the Riyadh Comedy Festival. Like, say, Andrew Schulz.

Marc Maron, come on this pod. Let me chop you up,” threatened Singh, a comedian too obscure to have been invited to the Riyadh festival himself. “I’ll chop you up like Jamal Khashoggi (the Saudi dissonant journalist who was murdered, allegedly with the approval of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman).”

That zinger got a big reaction from the fellas.

“Maron don’t care about nobody but himself,” said Schulz. “And anybody inside comedy knows this.”

After taking a break to promote “little dick supplement” Blue Chew and to riff through the week’s news topics, Riyadh critic David Cross got his turn on the roasting spit. On a recent edition of his Senses Working Overtime podcast, Cross told Marc Normand about a sketch featuring an elderly racist man using the N-slur, with up-and-coming rappers writing down his diatribes for future lyrics.

“That sketch is wildly condescending toward Black people in hip-hop,” accused Singh.

“He doesn’t know Black people,” offered Schulz.

“Hey, we got a lot of comedy fans in this room. What’s your favorite David Cross bit?” asked Singh, not letting anyone take a breath before concluding, “Oh, there we go. He’s a great actor. He’s hilarious. Sketches, acting, great. Stand-up? I can’t think of a single bit.”

Boom! Roasted! Singh might want to remember Schulz’s observation about shitting on other comedians, however: “If people know you for your opinions about comedy and not your jokes, you’re probably not funny.”
