21 TV Shows That Started ‘Meh’ But Ramped Up to ‘Whoa’

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ got super deep

Listen, some people come out of the gate swinging. They’re the first ones reading in kindergarten, they have real girlfriends in middle school, they become doctors and know how to tie a tie without help from YouTube. Others are late bloomers. They take a little bit longer to fully reach their stride, but they’re going to fulfill their potential, Mom, any day now.

The same is true for TV shows. Don’t get us wrong — there are some great pilots out there. It’s just that the lack of one doesn’t doom a series to the cancellation bin. Ensemble casts need time to get comfortable with each other, writers’ rooms need to find their groove, but as soon as everyone nails it down, it’s a well-oiled episodic machine.
