Inside the Meme Coin Community Behind the Dildo Throwing at WNBA Games

New reporting suggests that the crypto group will plan more pranks

There’s a lot going on right now, so it is understandable that you may have missed the news that there’s been a series of bright green dildos being thrown at WNBA players during games. In the last two weeks, there’s been six. So far, two people have been arrested. But that’s not the worst or weirdest part of this story — rather, it’s that these dildo assaults have apparently been a coordinated effort by a crypto meme coin group, according to reporting by USA Today

Apparently, a group of crypto traders created the Green Dildo Coin, a meme coin. According to the SEC, a meme coin “is a type of crypto asset inspired by internet memes, characters, current events or trends for which the promoter seeks to attract an enthusiastic online community to purchase the meme coin and engage in its trading.” The coins “typically have limited or no use or functionality,” and are highly subject to market volatility. In short: worthless scams.

The Green Dildo Coin has taken it a step further, incorporating misdemeanor crime into the promotion strategy. The X account states that it is “The Most Viral Green DILDO on ETH, Blessing the WNBA since 2025.”

An anonymous spokesman for Green Dildo Coin who goes by the name Lt. Daldo Raine on X said during a press conference with the media that the coin was launched to protest the rise of scams flooding the environment. (Most experts believe the coin itself is a pump-and-dump scheme.) The coin launched on July 28th, and the first green dildo was thrown at a WNBA game on July 29th. The spokesperson said the dildos weren’t meant to be harmful or disrespectful to the athletes, but part of the pranks meant to generate conversation.

“We knew that in order to get a voice in the space,” the spokesman told USA Today,  “we had to go out and do some viral stunts to save us from having to pay that influencer cabal, sacrifice our souls and the fate of the project."

Bullshit. While throwing things — even throwing sex toys — isn’t an entirely unheard of practice at professional sporting events, there’s something undeniably sexist and hateful about young men throwing sex toys at female basketball players at a time when the sport is rising in popularity.

Also, even if this wasn’t motivated by sexism and a hatred of the increasing success of women’s sports, the meme coin’s stated purpose for existing is nearly as lame. The (notably unnamed) spokesman said the goal of the group is to “spread awareness about a culture they want to perpetuate, cultivated around jokes, pranks and various stunts,” according to USA Today

In an anonymous video conference with the media, this same spokesman said that part of the goal was comedy. "We wanted to really make memes funny again," he said.

It’s not funny. The memes feel both childish and violent. There’s no deeper meaning to throwing dick-shaped sex toys at women, except maybe one about young men expressing frustration at their own erectile dysfunction. Two different young men have been arrested related to these incidents, though the meme coin group says that they weren’t a part of their efforts.

Obviously, this behavior hasn’t been well received by the WNBA. In a post-game interview, L.A. Sparks coach Lynne Roberts called the behavior “ridiculous,” “dumb” and “stupid.”

"It’s also dangerous,” Roberts continued. “Player safety is number one, respecting the game, all those things. I think it’s really stupid.”

The issue has been escalated by the WNBA Player’s Union, and the league issued a formal statement as well. “The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials and fans,” the WNBA said in a statement shared with the media. “In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities.”

There doesn’t seem to be any slowing down of the object throwing, however. On Thursday night, another dildo was thrown during a game between Atlanta Dream and Chicago Sky in Chicago, according to the Associated Press. “This has been going on for centuries, the sexualization of women. This is the latest version of that. And it’s not funny,” Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said, according to ESPN

While Reeve is right that the throwing of green dick-shaped objects at women isn’t funny, the meme coin is still finding financial success — the price of the coin has reportedly increased by 300 percent over the past week. In addition to the scammy coin itself, there’s Green Dildo Coin NFTs and a Green Dildo Coin merch shop.

The group reportedly has plans to target other sporting events in the future, too — they put a green dildo in the crowd of an MLB game on Wednesday night. It’s no doubt that this story is filled with a bunch of dicks.
