Death is a natural part of life, which means it’s a natural part of movies and TV, too. Nobody hands out living creatures as prizes at the fair anymore, so parents can’t use the old “Goldie went to a better place” tactic, meaning it’s up to Disney to teach kids about death. Your own mother’s death isn’t going to hit you as hard as Hedwig the owl, so really, you should thank J.K. Rowling (except, you know, don’t).

But just because a death is resonant doesn’t mean it’s right. Sometimes, writers kill off audience-favorite characters just for shock value, or they disrespectfully bump them off without fanfare, or they’re just really, really mean about it.
