Horror relies on surprise. You may dismiss the jump-scare as cheap theatrics, but it’s an effective way to push the audience off-balance, at least the first time. Let’s face it: It’s just not as scary if you already know the bad guy is in the closet.

Possibly the most effective surprise, however, is when you didn’t even realize you were watching a horror movie. “I just watched Deep Rising (1998),” Redditor FolsgaardSE told r/Horror, calling it a “B-level action flick, then all of a sudden, in the last 15 minutes or so, (it) turns into a full-blown horror movie. (It) has a The Thing feel to it.”
