Every generation has a primary influence outside their families that in some ways held more responsibility for raising them than their parents. Today’s kids might agree that they’ve been raised by YouTube and TikTok, ignored by parents entranced by their own screens. Older generations, orphaned by war or disease or literally any job before OSHA, largely raised themselves. And some of us, well, some of us were raised by TV.

And honestly, depending on the parents in question, that might have been for the best. Unlike most parents of the late 20th century, TV moms and dads always had time for the kids. With the exception of, like, Don Draper or Walter White, they always had the best advice, and they never failed to demonstrate what it meant to be a good person and functioning member of society.
