The tragedy is that I like Winston's comics on Cracked because they are concise and to the point, but when I looked at his actual comic archive, there were some pages where I just had to take a moment and ask myself: "Am I reading a novel?" I ask this because while people really shouldn't be complaining about the 3rd panel on this specific comic, his other works have walls of text that are easily 2-3x longer than that. It is a genuine shame since his art is actually very nice to look at, but comics are a visual medium. He really should take Will Eisner's wisdom into consideration: 3 lines in a word bubble, maximum. The skill of a talented comic artist isn't how pretty his pictures are - the skill depends on how little dialogue he can use to get his point across.
ReplyThat was...weird.
ReplySame thing with college dorms.
ReplyDo you even get a choice there? I thought you just went where they put you.
Last time we looked for a new rental the nightmare was that every place told us they had a unit coming soon but had nothing available to look at. They wanted us to put a deposit and sign papers on a place that we would not see until the day we moved in. We rented the one place we looked at where we got to see the unit.
Replythis is SO f**kING TRUE!! I hate looking for a new place to live.
ReplyI really hate this incredibly retarded comic. So Cracked please can this piece of s**t.
Reply Hide All See All 5 RepliesIts ok. Someday, when you move out of your moms basement, you'll get it.
So cracked, can this piece of shit................ what? f*****g sentences that have no end man lol
Hey, hecktermfour, I know this has probably been said before, but you could try not clicking on the article, just skip past it? It seems to work for me when I don't want to read something
@Klokinator "can" being the verb in that sentence, as in "get rid of"
I hope you die in pain, you horrible person.
Subnormality's pretty much always funny. I guess some people are too set in the habit of tl;dr. It takes 15 or 30 seconds, if that's too long you have some sort of super ADD.
ReplyRemember that article about why online political cartoons suck due to over-explanation? This is why.
ReplyExcept it has nothing to do with this. Do you see little labels pointing out "lightning", "rain", "cat"?
No. Do *you* remember that article?
I think Silenus is talking about the third panel, which could indeed stand to be much less wordy.
Indoor weather? Is the place cursed?
ReplyNo, it's awesome :D
That was randomly funny. Kudos.
ReplyI've read every single Basic Instructions, and out of the like 500 of them, 5 or so were actualy funny, none were laugh out loud funny, but they were funny. But I personaly LOVE Subnormality, they get me every time, they're so spot on.
ReplyYa know, I often read comics on this website and then venture a guess at the overall tone of the comments. Usually people hate Basic Instructions. Subnormality is usually a mix. I read this and got a kick out of it (mainly because I'm one of the Basic Instruction's haters due to a lack of visual variance) and I thought most of the comments would be positive on this one.
Reply Hide All See All 3 RepliesI was wrong.
imho...basic instruction is genius...i love that kind of dry humour.
The thing is, Basic Instructions is dry humor peppered with a little bit of corniness from time to time. And as Corny as I can be, is a little too much for this McGee.
@ Rev09 your comment place me back in a sence from movie a this is priceless comedy a definitly wait for it moment So let me started by slowly getting on floor laying down on the ground start rolling and being laugh my butt off is it real that funny Oooh shhhh!!t I get it Cracking up For real #Cracked
Holy s**t, why are you people so critical. Are you really so perversely self absorbed that you think the 15-20 seconds you spent reading this comic which you paid nothing for means that you are owed something?
ReplyI thought it was clever, it's nice to see something a bit creative and well drawn. But even if I didn't like it I'd think typing a 500 word essay about how this 'sucks' (because you, anonymous internet poser are so much more clever) is pretty f**king retarded.
It reminds me of when the Sunday Calvin & Hobbes comics would use long texts with large colorful detailed pictures. It adds another dimension to the whole 1-2-3 formula of most comics. I like this comic.
Reply Hide All See All 8 RepliesBill Watterson can draw, knows how to use space in a drawing to his advantage, and he's smart enough to actually think of a decent joke. I'm guessing that he would hate this strip. He hated having to squeeze a bunch of words into small panels.
Whoever rights this could take a few more pointers from his work. But they won't.
I do too graaa, and personally, I think the guy that writes this comic, Winston, is a genius. Subnormality is always thought-provoking and keeps me interested every time. I think the criticisms he receives on Cracked are unwarranted. Different kinds of people, I think.
And no, I am not affiliated with the creator or anything. I did get into his comic originally because of Cracked though.
THANK you Natnie. I'm sick of all the people fighting about his comics. I think deep down all the people criticizing them really like the comic because why else would they keep coming back?
And really, who else makes comments about drawing space and fitting words into bubbles but aspiring comic-artists themselves? So I think a few people might be jealous of Winston too...
Watterson was also smart enough to retire when he knew he was out of material.
Out of material? Subnormality is updated once or twice a week and has been around for a while. Winston constantly writes and draws deep comics on his website. The ones here on cracked are on a lower level of humor and depth and I'll admit that, but that doesn't take anything away from his talent.
Just making a general comment on Watterson's insightful mind, it really has no bearing on the comic above.
Comparing any cartoonist to Bill Watterson is like comparing women's exercise videos to handjobs from Jesus. That being said, Winston Rowntree's comics are really good, a lot of them are very intelligent and thought-provoking, and he's a good artist, too. I imagine if he decided to settle on a comic with a recurring cast of characters and stuff like that, it would be great.
Word Blusky, I'll give you that. But check out the main subnormality comics; he's got some recurring characters that make appearances every 10 comics or so like the Sphynx, Pink Haired Girl, the Green Devil, etc
I chuckled a little. Better than most abnormalities.
ReplyAwful comic.
ReplyOh come on, it wasn't that bad.
Of course there is going to be a major problem for what you're looking for at that price range. :/
ReplyI didn't mind the text. It added to the humor of the hell one. This one just wasn't funny at all.
Reply Hide All See All 3 Replieswhat!? this isn't great, but its funnier than that 'hell' one, that sucked, i smirked at this, which is more than i can say for most of the comics on here. so far I think the little boy with the bear is in the lead. hehehe
i liked the Hell one. :P
(friggin double-post)
Some of these I think would work better as skits. I liked this, but I didn't laugh. If you had an actress really ranting about all the bulls**t she'd been through and was frazzled and progressively more-so throughout until that last line "indoor weather" was delivered with a cheap special effect, I think it would've hit harder a non sequitur.
ReplyYou know, since you totally asked the opinion of the guy you never met.
Ah, but I agree.
keep posting your opinions, these are some good ones sir
