Deep down, even the biggest of ‘fraidy cats understand that movies aren’t real. The monsters captured in the celluloid of a movie can't escape, they can't physically get you, and the worst that they can maybe do is influence your nightmares when you go to sleep that night. Still, when you're in a dark room with only the light of a TV, spooky movies can still scare the crap out of you. That's thanks to the work of countless people on any given production: screenwriters coming up with a spooky story, directors telling that story with a pacing that creates tension and intrigue, and special effects artists who make some of the most horrifying ideas seem to come to life. 

Here are some of our favorite facts about the making of some of our favorite scary movies. Sure, maybe this will break the illusion… If we manage to remember next time the lights go out.
