Deep down, even the biggest of ‘fraidy cats understand that movies aren’t real. The monsters captured in the celluloid of a movie can't escape and can’t physically get you. The worst that they can maybe do is influence your nightmares when you go to sleep at night. Still, when you’re in a dark room with only the light of a TV, spooky movies can still scare the bejeezus out of you. That’s thanks to the work of countless people on any given production: screenwriters coming up with a spooky story; directors telling that story with a pacing that creates tension and intrigue; and special-effects artists who make some of the most horrifying ideas come to life.

Here are our favorite facts about the making of some of our favorite scary movies. Sure, maybe this will break the illusion — if, of course, we manage to remember them the next time the lights go out…
