33 Inventions Humanity Would’ve Been Better Without

I remember being a nerdy little kid and early internet adopter, absolutely gobsmacked by the possibilities. I could connect with people all over the world, ones who had an interest in discussing the weird Sega Genesis games no one else at my school had. Of course, the good came with the bad, and now, the internet is also enabling community building between people who are mostly trying to bring slurs back into everyday language.

Still, I wouldn’t say that we would have been better off without the internet. Other inventions’ scales aren’t so even, however. There are inventions that sure seemed convenient at the time, but whose consequences sent the opposite platter, loaded with cons, clanking onto the tabletop hard enough to dent.

We’re talking about the stuff Redditors talked about below…

GonzoThompson . 6mo ago There are much better answers here already, but I'll add Keurig coffee pods. Supposedly, the inventor himself regretted his invention because of all the pollution it has led to.

Prasiatko 6mo ago Leaded fuel. Not only did it cocer the environment with toxic lead but the alternative at the time was mixing in small amounts of ethanol with the fuel. So we could very well have more advanced biofuel technology had leaded fuel not been used.
IntoxicatingSarah971 - 6mo ago Deep-sea oil rigs.
jharrisimages 6mo ago The American Two-Tiered For Profit Healthcare System
WannabeMemester420 6mo ago Chemical warfare, it has done nothing but fuck up the victims of these chemicals. Imagine feeling like you're lit on fire and deal with the after effects of it decades later, yeah that's mustard gas. Then there's chemicals like agent orange that has negatively affected the health of many people, even generations down the line. There's a reason why the Geneva convention has put right banned them.
gimnastic_octopus . 6mo ago Cigarettes. Absolutely no real use and so harmful.
NothingToSeeHere8-8 . 6mo ago Plastic. Glass and metal should be the standard. Most plastic should only be made if it can biodegrade. We have them now. It just needs to be fine tuned and mandated
Istealketchup . 6mo ago Social media
99PercentApe 6mo ago The public limited company. Prioritising shareholder returns above all else incentivizes harmful practices, from ecosystem destruction to health crises, as external costs are ignored. By granting corporations the legal rights of a person without the responsibilities, they are able to pursue short term profit at the expense of societal and environmental well- being. This structure divorces accountability from those in power, enabling widespread damage with minimal repercussions. As a species, we would have struggled to achieve this level of fucked without them.
ShdwWzrdMnyGngg 6mo ago Al. Or at least the garbage they shovel as Al. It has a few good use cases. But for the most part, it's very bad news.
NutInBobby .. 6mo ago Nuclear weapons.
StationOk7229 . 6mo ago Leaf blowers.
stevejobs4525 . 6mo ago That Dyson hand dryer
jadzi4 . 6 mo ago Fentanyl
ghdgdnfj . 6mo ago AirBnB
jax_cooper 6mo ago Cryptocurrency More money goes in than people get out (because of lost wallet keys), it still does not have a usecase today and uses a ton of energy to maintain. Also, the recurring hype has way more downsides than upsides, like it does not let it die. It could have been a fun technology if people hadnt used it as investment.
yazooda . 6mo ago Social media algorithms. What started as a way to connect us has turned into a system that feeds us what we want to hear, amplifies outrage, and turns healthy discussions into shouting matches. It's like humanity accidentally invented a mirror that only reflects our worst impulses-and then made it go viral.
blinkysmurf . 6mo ago Inexpensive, refined sugar and saturated fat. A significant portion of the grocery story is devoted to this true opiate of the masses- food for entertainment, not sustenance, much to our detriment.
ecfritz . 6mo ago Lead paint
 ].6mo ago Trickle Down Economics
Idodgebulletslike50 . 6mo ago Alcohol, just has to be the thing that brings down a lot of good people, I love it but would love to see a world without the option
6mo ago Racism. I mean, animals stay out of each others' territory, but the don't actively discriminate based on color. No wolf has ever been like ok Jimothy you can't drink out of this river because you're a grey wolf, only brown wolves can drink here, and yet humans have figured out how to make each other's lives worse simply based on a biological feature that no one can change.
Sterek01 6mo ago Cell phones. I remember a time when we were not in total contact 24/7. Life was less stressful.
BusinessPlot . 6mo ago Heroin
futanari_kaisa . 6mo ago Medication advertisements
ImprovementFar5054 6mo ago The internal combustion engine. There WERE successful early cars that used steam and that used electricity. Imagine the geopolitical landscape where fossil fuel was not the main driver. I am aware of course that cars are NOT the primary consumer of fossil fuels but they are a huge part of the C02 levels increasing.
Ok_Pea8520 . 6mo ago insurance
calypsovibes 6mo ago Targeted advertising. I'd gladly trade slightly less relevant ads for not feeling like every website is actively spying on my soul.
Roemeeeer . 6mo ago Microtransactions. That damn horse armor destroyed the gaming culture.
Turdle_Vic . 6mo ago CFCS
june07r . 6mo ago m tol adidas - CBF for your We are are peering directly into it.
zuc-zuc 6mo ago Pop-up ads. Even Ethan Zuckerman, the man who invented pop-up ads, apologized to the world for unintentionally creating one of the internet's most hated forms of advertising.
