23 Legitimately Good Ideas That Sound Terrible on Paper

You ever had a friend swear on their life that some thoroughly fucked-up food combination was “actually really good,” only for you to try it and, against all instinct, agree? For me, it’s like the first time I got a salad from a Thai restaurant slathered in what seemed like thin peanut butter. Now, I tear into those things like a squirrel at a Chopt on its lunch break.

What I’m trying to say here is, sometimes things have to be experienced or tried to be believed, even in the usually necessarily rote world of science. Throughout history, there’s been ideas where the elevator pitch wasn’t convincing, but the results sure were.

On Reddit, users shared their examples of successful ideas that sound bad on paper, collected below for your begrudging agreement.

nicetrylaocheREALLY . 1y ago What, Sir? Would you make a ship sail against the wind and currents by lighting a bonfire under her deck? I pray you excuse me, I have no time to listen to such nonsense. Napoleon Bonaparte, regarding the steam engine
ceruleanbear8 . 1y ago Dropping a whole bunch of cats by parachute over Borneo to stop the spread of plague.
bitsplease_ . 1y ago Attemting to cure syphilis with malaria. Brilliantly worked is a strech though.
The_Real_Scrotus . 1y ago Putting out oil well fires by blowing them up.
emsesq 1y ago Rumor has it that the founder of FedEx received a С in college on a paper describing his proposed business. According to the rumor, the professor thought no one would use the service when the Post Office already provided that service at lower cost.
ScaryBoyRobots 1y ago CATS, the Broadway musical. A nonsense fever dream about horny catpeople competing to die and be reborn (yes, that is the plot, insofar as CATS has one), based on a book of silly short poems by T.S. Eliot that are not really related to each other except all being about cats. Just catpeople introducing themselves and rubbing on each other for several hours, then one of them ascends aka dies. To date, CATS has made over a billion dollars worldwide.
FeelThePower999 . 1y ago Curing deadly, previously incurable infections which had historically been responsible for the early demise of billions of people throughout all of human history.... with mold.
mst3k 42 C 1y ago The Sims computer game. It sounds like the stupidest idea ever - who would want to control a Sim character doing all the mundane shit we do every day. How boring. But | played the shit out of the Sims, then the subsequent versions.
Zaenos . 1y ago Selling bottled water in places where tap water is both free and better regulated used to be a joke.
biscovery. 1y ago A movie rental company that mails you DVDs. | thought it was the shittiest idea when it first came out when I could drive 5 minutes to Blockbuster and get whatever I wanted then.
. 1y ago Slowing down your product actually improves customer confidence in it Most website loading bars are artificial animations put in there because most people don't trust a website if it returns the data as fast as it actually can
lemurlemur 1y ago Twitter Let's restrict users to very short messages for no particular reason. Looks dumb on paper but really took off (and then eventually devolved into an alt-right dumpster fire, but that's another story)
nhh . 1y ago Some guys thought people would be interested in renting out their bedrooms to strangers. Airbnb was this born.
Blehhh_lemongrass . 1y ago Escape rooms. It sounds silly writing it down on paper that you have to lock yourself in a room and solve puzzles but irl it's actually super fun
N_o_r_m_a_l 1y ago Arguably, ride share. What?! Strangers drive you and they don't even have a medallion!
TheTrueGoldenboy 1y ago Okay, how about... You take a popular children's toy and make a movie out of it? Sounds ridiculously dumb and yet you have The Lego Movie, Barbie, the entire Trolls media franchise... oh, and holy shit, the American Girl dolls have SO. many. movies. I'm not saying everything is an amazing watch, but if you're talking about successes then you can't deny there have been a lot of them. Plenty of failures too though, for sure.
RedFallingstar_. 1 1y ago On paper, the idea of selling empty boxes may seem absurd and pointless. However, in reality, there is a successful business where companies sell empty boxes as packaging for gifts or storage. People buy them for courier shipments, moving, and, of course, to wrap mysterious gifts
free from choice . 1y ago Blowing powdered smallpox sores up your nose to prevent smallpox...
Asgard033 . 1y ago Don't let that starving person eat too much. It's not actually a good idea to let a person who has starved to stuff themselves with food the first chance they get. Controlled feeding over the course of a few days avoids something called refeeding syndrome where changes in the body during the period of starvation can have fatal consequences if too much food is reintroduced too quickly.
Upbeat_Tension_8077 . 1y ago Lasik Eye Surgery. Imagine telling the first recipient of it that they'll have a laser directly on their eyeball to improve their eyesight, & to trust them that it won't destroy them.
mongonogo . 1y ago Fight fire with fire. Saw a video of a large moving vehicle burning a long line of grass from behind to stop wildfires from proceeding further.
FS_Scott . 1y ago Operation Mincemeat.
vanityklaw 1y ago As someone who spent a lot of time around 2005 trying to describe it to some very skeptical people, I would definitely say Wikipedia.
