If you go by how they’re portrayed in the media, the CIA’s main goal is locating and neutralizing Jason Bourne. In real life, however, they’ve had their sticky hands in clandestine, violent pies the world over. They’ve also done some less than Christian things to American citizens.

RonPalancik 2y ago (Former CIA employee here) In my view, it was the moment they lost their initial mission: observe, analyze, coordinate. Actually doing stuff, changing outcomes, was outside the agency's purpose from the beginning. The saying goes, All Truman wanted was a newspaper. Literally, at its creation, and in its name, the CIA's mission was supposed to be: 1. intelligence (gathering information) and 2. central (taking information from multiple sources, analyzing and synthesizing it, and coordinating among government agencies).

2y ago Edited 2y ago There are plenty of answers here that rely on scale for the definition of worst but I'd say the qualitatively worst thing the CIA did was fund MKULTRA experiments in Canada. Mental patients were locked in isolation, deprived of sensory stimuli and made to listen to recordings on a loop for weeks on end. Some were subjected to electroshock treatments so powerful they lost all episodic memory of their lives and became the mental equivalent of children. Some of these experiments were paired with psychedelics. Imagine the experience of losing all memory, tripping balls

2y ago Basically being fully responsible for the rise of islamic radicalism, fundamentalism and terrorism in the middle east. The coup in Iran in 1953 which built the foundation for the mullah regime as well as supporting and training islamistic paramilitaries during the first Afghan war who later became Al-Qaida and Taliban. Obviously the gulf wars, the occupation of Afghanistan and the war in Syria also just boosted the ideology of fundamentalism and islamist terrorism as a sort of revenge thing because of the killing hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, but these weren't solely CIA operations
