29 Times the TV and Movie Industry Pulled a Fast One on You

How could our favorite movies and shows betray us like this?!?!
29 Times the TV and Movie Industry Pulled a Fast One on You

We trusted you! We looked to you awesome movies and TV shows for the facts, and you completely led us astray. Now, thanks to you, we thought that explosions in space were way cooler than they actually are.

Movie magic is one thing, but movie myths are just plain wrong. For shame, Hollywood. For shame.

Pleading Insanity

AN INSANITY DEFENSE IS RARELY USED (LET ALONE SUCCESSFULLY). Even though a lot of fictional murderers try to get declared not guilty for reason of insanity, this defense is invoked in less than 1% of all real cases (and only one third of those are about murder). Additionally, only about one in four insanity pleas are successful. CRACKED.COM

Objections in Court

OBJECTIONS AREN'T JUST ABOUT LAWYERS YELLING. An objection is a very technical, structured procedure-one of the parts calmly tells the judge what they're concerned about (mentioning the legal basis for it), the other party gets to answer, and the judge rules on it. Just yelling OBJECTION! won't get you anywhere. CRACKED.COM

Immunity

DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY ISN'T A LICENSE TO COMMIT CRIMES. The country where you're diplomatic-ing can't detain or prosecute you, but you can be expelled- and your home country can prosecute you (or choose to lift your immunity). And if you're caught committing a serious crime, police are perfectly empowered to arrest your diplomatic butt. CRACKED.COM

Straightjackets

Straitjackets aren't used anymore. Physical restraints in mental hospitals (a highly regulated and monitored issue in the U.S.) include wrists and ankle bracelets that attach to the bed, but not straitjackets. Those have been phased out a long time ago. CRACKED.COM

OCD

CRACKED.COM Obsessive-compulsive disorder isn't about being a neat freak. You can get fixated on order and cleanliness, but also on other things, like not harming people, or even counting things. Whatever the case, OCD isn't a personality quirk-it's a condition that causes a great deal of suffering and can stop you from living your life.

Space Explosions

In many space movies, including Star Wars, explosions in space are depicted as the ones on the surface of the Earth - with fire and shock waves. In reality, something like this would happen. CRACKED.COM

Jellyfish

Peeing on a jellyfish sting CRACKED.COM Urinating on a sting to alleviate pain is a complete myth. Pee can actually worsen the sting. Use seawater on the affected area instead.

Nosebleeds

Tilting your head back during a nosebleed CRACKED COM Pinch your nose and lean slightly forward. Leaning backwards can cause blood and other secretions to go down your throat.

Removing Bullets

Removing a bullet from a wound CRACKED.COM Unless you were shot by an musket, removing a bullet will only cause further harm. Bullets may be applying pressure to a damaged blood vessel.

Playing Dead

Playing dead around a bear CRACKED.COM Playing dead is only advised with brown bears in certain situations but does not work for black bears. If a bear actually attacks you, it's important to fight back.

Snake Venom

Sucking out snake venom CRACKED.COM Venom spreads so quickly that this won't work. It only causes further risk of infection. 25% of bites from venomous snakes don't contain any venom, SO seek medical assistance ASAP before you make any risky moves.

Steak

Using a raw steak on a black eye 5E CRACKED.COM Steaks contain bacteria which could cause an infection if you stick it against your injured eye. Better to grab an ice pack.

The Untouchables

THE UNTOUCHABLES Eliot Ness throws Frank Nitti offthe roofofthe courthouse. Actually, Frank Nitti was Al Capone's successor and one of the main leaders of The Outfit until his suicide in 1943. CRACKED.COM

Rudy

The most poignant scene in Rudy stretches the truth. HST JAN TON VITE m MACK ATES STERE 21 17 GOORDA DALE 1 TASE РЕЖСК 33 21 2 94 WH 22 72 43 CRESIS 19 Joe Montana says no one chanted Rudy's name and the team carried him off the field as a joke. GRAGKED.COM

Tourette’s Syndrome

Most people with Tourette's syndrome don't curse. Well, maybe they do, but just like everyone else, not because of the Tourette's. The syndrome is characterized by tics, such as blinking, twitching, or clearing your throat. Only about 10% show coprolalia (saying inappropriate stuff without meaning to). CRACKED.COM

Double Jeopardy

YOU DON'T GET TO KILL SOMEONE IF YOU WERE WRONGFULLY CONVICTED FOR THEIR DEATH. No, the double jeopardy clause doesn't apply. You (not) killing someone yesterday and you killing them tomorrow are separate events, and you can totally be tried for both. (Also, the state and federal governments can both prosecute you independently of each other.) CRACKED.COM

Crime Scenes

Cops don't investigate crime scenes. SCENE DO NOT CROSS The people who collect and analyze the evidence do work for police departments, but they're not police officers - rather, they're civilian technicians with no badge. CRACKED.COM

Profiling

Profiling isn't all that useful, actually. Are profilers super-psychologists who can get into the criminal's mind without even meeting them? Hardly- research shows that law enforcement profilers are only slightly better at it than untrained randos. CRACKED.COM

Stealth Aircraft

CRACKED.COM STEALTH AIRCRAFT AREN'T REALLY UNDETECTABLE. No aircraft can be invisible to radar - the point is fooling the enemy into thinking it's something else, blending in with the background noise. This is becoming more and more difficult, as radar tech evolves.

Prosecutors

PROSECUTORS AREN'T USUALLY UNDERDOGS. Scrappy prosecutors taking on rich sleazes with hotshot lawyers are the exception, not the rule. Up to 90% of defendants can't afford their own lawyers, and must rely on overworked, underfunded public defenders, who don't have the resources of prosecutors. CRACKED.COM

Cops

No, cops aren't required to tell you they're cops. It's entrapment if they don't reveal they're police officers when you ask! you hear-but that's BS. It's only entrapment if they actively push you to commit a crime, not if they pinky swear that they're totally not cops and you'll get away with it. CRACKED.COM

Split Personalities

GRAGKED.COM Your personality won't split just because your life sucks. Dissociative identity disorder is understood to be caused by repetitive childhood trauma (such as abuse). Tyler Durden won't come along to keep you company because you feel alienated by a consumerist society.

Starting Planes

STARTING AN AIRCRAFT ISN'T AS SIMPLE AS FLIPPING A FEW SWITCHES. Before you can get airborne, you have to go through a list of checks and steps, which can be several pages long. If you need to make a quick getaway, maybe consider a car? CRACKED.COM

Chalk Outlines

CRACKED.COM Chalk outlines were never a police tool. 3 Outlining a body doesn't help with the investigation - when it was done at all, it was just to give the press something to photograph that wasn't the actual body. Today it's just not done anymore.

The Rorschach Test

The Rorschach test is not a reliable diagnostic tool. The test's validity has been severely questioned since the 1960s. Also, it requires that the patient knows nothing about the inkblots - good luck with that when anyone can look up anything on the internet. CRACKED.COM

Trials

MOST CRIMINAL TRIALS AREN'T ABOUT VIOLENT CRIMES. Very rarely does TV show a trial for anything less than a robbery or a murder, but less than 5% of arrests are for violent crimes. Most proceedings stem from undramatic, minor violations, like outstanding fines or disorderly conduct. CRACKED.COM

Jets

CRACKED.COM IT'S REALLY NOT A GOOD IDEA TO TAKE OFF YOUR M MASK IN A FIGHTER JET. Fighter jets aren't pressurized like airliners are, and on top of that, high-G maneuvers can make it hard to breathe - so pilots need their oxygen masks on to, you know, not pass out and die.

Psychopaths

CRACKED.COM Most psychopaths aren't murderers. About one out of 100 people show psychopathic traits - we'd be in big trouble if they were all Patrick Bateman. They can be impulsive, manipulative, and callous, but swinging axes is not a common thing they do.
