32 Authors Who Loved (or Loathed) the Movie and TV Adaptations of Their Work

Once we sell producers the film rights to this list, its really out of our hands. They can do whatever they want with it, and we just have to wait till the premiere like everyone else. 

Could they have kept us on as consultants? Sure. But apparently that “might greatly annoy the director.” Guess well try to keep busy and just hope they dont massacre our fine, fine list of loved and loathed adaptations.

CRACKED.COM J. G. Ballard rebuked a journalist for dissing David Cronenberg's CRASH. The movie is actually better than  book, Ballard said to a Finnish journalist who said the adaptation watered down the novel. It goes further than the book, and is much more powerful and dynamic. It's terrific. (Ot that's how Cronenberg remembers it, at any rate.)

Nick Hornby

CRACKED.COM Nick Hornby loves the ending of ABOUT A BOY. The ending of the film is completely different , Hornby has said, and I love the ending of the film... It really, really works. This is a notoriously aloof British author praising the American Pie directors for changing his story, so that's a serious compliment.

According to the British author, he had to watch Christopher Nolan's adaptation of his novel three times before being able to appreciate it as a movie. Ray Bradbury

Ray Bradbury praised FAHRENHEIT 451 for not killing a character. The novel kills off Clarisse almost as soon as she appears, something Bradbury later regretted. So he very much approved that she survives in the 1966 movie version, and reunites with Montag at the end. CRACKED.COM

CRACKED.COM Chuck Palahniuk approved of FIGHT CLUB'S focus on romance. FIGHT CLUB Palahniuk said he felt sort of embarrassed by the book after watching David Fincher's adaptation. Не liked the more streamlined plot, and the greater focus on the narrator and Marla's relationship. The story is about a man reaching the point where he can commit to a woman.

Stephen King

Stephen King loves the ending of THE MIST. King's novella ends in an ambiguous, but kind of hopeful note-completely unlike Frank Darabont's movie adaptation. Frank wrote a new ending that I loved, King said. It is the most shocking ending ever. CRACKED.COM

Philip K. Dick

CRACKED.COM Philip K. Dick thought that BLADE RUNNER transcended his (or anyone's) work. Dick never got to see Blade Runner before dying, but what little he did see he thought superior to anything science fiction had done before. I did not know that a work of mine ... could be escalated into such stunning dimensions.

Ron Chernow

Ron Chernow has seen HAMILTON dozens of times. Chernow didn't feel that a hip-hop musical was the right medium to adapt his biography of Alexander Hamilton, but Lin-Manuel Miranda quickly convinced him that it totally was. Robert Kirkman loves DARYL DIXON as much as any fan of The Walking Dead. Kirkman approves of almost every change the series has made to the story-and he specially approves of the scruffy crossbow wielder. Gary K. Wolf took WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT as canon over his own book. Wolf's Who Censored Roger Rabbit? is very different from Robert Zemeckis' adaptation. Wolf seems to prefer the cinematic Toontown, as the second Roger Rabbit book is more a sequel to the movie than to his first novel. CRACKED.COM

George R. R. Martin prefers the Osha from GAME OF THRONES. Martin wrote Osha more as a plot device than a character, and was impressed by how much more fully rounded and interesting the show made her.
