21 Great Movies That Shouldn’t Have Been Nearly as Good

For every Oscar-winning magnum opus, Hollywood has produced a stunning amount of dreck. Not so much these days, when they’re too scared to even release a completed film that everyone loves if it’s not part of a franchise, but there was a time when a producer could pitch their most unhinged fever dream shower thoughts and studios would simply hand over a big brown bag with a dollar sign on it. That time was the ‘80s, when illegal stimulants were a lot more socially acceptable.

The thing is, though, that most successful Hollywood producers know what they’re doing, even (sometimes especially) the ones most fond of illegal stimulants. As a result, some of those bonkers pitches turned into legitimately great movies. “My answer: MacGruber,” one Redditor told r/AskReddit. “And The A-Team, that film was really fun.”

They then asked, “What are some movies that are way better than they had any right to be?” and their fellow Redditors provided all kinds of right stuff.

4Elephants 7y ago The LEGO movie is absolutly perfect
StraY_WolF 7y ago Tremors. It hits all the right note for a monster movie without the any of the annoying tropes.
mixbany 7y ago Big Trouble in Little China. I still cannot explain why it works but I love how surprised people are to enjoy it.
TopHat1935 7y ago Surf's Up A movie about surfing penguins. It doesnt sound like its worth your time, but it's great.
cgo_12345 . 7y ago Ant-Man is so much better than it has any business being. Paul Rudd shrinks and controls ants with his mind? Come the hell on.
NerdGirlJess 7y ago Josie and the Pussycats was a genuinely funny movie that was killer satire with a big statement. And a great soundtrack!
Sosig rpunx 7y ago Phone Booth (2003) . Practically the whole film is just a guy in a phone booth. Still makes for a pretty solid thriller.
snide-remark 7y ago Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. One of the few films that has me laughing almost every time I watch and some of the best quotes!
carl052293 7y ago The Princess Bride. It's the cheesiest thing ever and they use freaking MIDI for the soundtrack. But it's absolutely fantastic.
LolYouFuckingLoser 7y ago . Edited 7y ago Wayne's World. Never would have thought that a movie adaptation for a sketch bit from a show I barely enjoyed would end up being my all- time favorite movie and a quintessential movie for the time.
7y ago . Edited 7y ago I would say Clue. It's based on a board game, so how good can it really be?? Turns out it's possibly one of the funniest movies from the 80s!
BlueRose426 . 7y ago . Edited 7y ago The very first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It was just a movie based on a theme park ride, how did it end up revitalizing the pirate genre and just being an all around excellent movie?
SelinaRidewell 7y ago This was years ago....but my dad made me watch Galaxy Quest shortly after it came out on video one Saturday. I was like, That Tim Allen space movie? You've got to be kidding. Не insisted. I agreed and had low expectations for it. Of course, loved it.
LcVfx 7y ago I'm surprised no one mentioned Rango. It's hysterical, compelling, surprising - a mishmash of great B-western/B-airplane picture/B- conspiracy movies with genius animation that's S00000 beautiful. I could watch that 50 times and see something new every iteration. I mention that to others as one of my top 5's and most everyone gives me the Huh? face. Wow.
stone500 7y ago For me, the Mortal Kombat movie (not the sequel). The character designs were spot on for the most part. They paid attention to the lore (of what little there was at the time). Some of the creative liberties worked really well (Scorpion's spear). The fight scenes were pretty well done. The soundtrack was unforgettable. The only thing it really needed was to be rated R and have actual gore.
soomuchcoffee 7y ago National Treasure. It's so, so stupid. It gets replayed on TBS 500 times a year for a reason. But god damn it if I don't check it out when I'm flicking through channels because it's just so endearing. I'm also holding out hope that one of these days I'll get to the end and Gates will accidentally burn the treasure room down in some sort of Director's Cut snafu.
DamonLazer 7y ago Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. A silly '80's movie about two dumb high school kids who are about to fail history class when a stranger from the future gives them a time machine so they can go back in time, learn about history and pass their class, so they can go on to save the future with their rock music. It sounds like it would be pretty awful, but somehow it ended up being one of my favorite movies. It still holds up today.
Be_Good_To_Others 7y ago The Lord of the Rings. I know what you're going to say. They are a masterpiece. And that is exactly it. I don't think anyone really expected them to be so. Lotr was considered to be pretty much unfilmable, and coming from a genre (fantasy) which very few people even took seriously. And then we got all those hours of pure cinematic ecstasy.
phathead 7y ago In hindsight it seems ridiculous, but The Iron Giant. Saturday morning cartoons were plagued with ads for it, with a giant robot waving a rock and tree around, I was sick of it before I sat down at the theater. Parents dumped me and my siblings off so they could watch some cool R-rated movie, and we were kinda bummed. We didn't know what to expect, but we anticipated the worst. Lo' and behold I was about to watch one of my all-time favorite movies ever.
ZeiglerJaguar 7y ago Edited 7y ago There is absolutely no reason that The Emperor's New Groove should have been as much of a comedy classic as it became. It was a troubled production that was originally meant to be something completely different, and the end result was basically them trying to salvage something from all the effort, starring a guy known mostly for bad, dumb, lowbrow junk. And the title is atrociously bad. It's unbelievable that it became one of the funniest films of the 21st century.
thefedoragirl 7y ago You know what, I'm gonna come right out and say it: A Goofy Movie. It has a perfect balance of humor, sweetness, and 90's charm, the animation is beautiful, and that's not even getting into the story. What I especially love is that neither Goofy or his son Max are portrayed as being entirely in the right or entirely in the wrong. They both have very good reasons for doing what they do, and you can empathize with them both equally. Max is a teenager who cares a bit too deeply about what his peers think of
