In The Pines (famously recorded by Nirvana for their 1994 unplugged album with the title Where Did You Sleep Last Night) is so old, its roots are unclear. The murder ballad is believed to originate from an Appalachian folk song from the early 1900s, but was likely brought overseas from as far back as Elizabethan England.
