Adam Sandler and Judd Apatow used to live a really charmed life as up-and-coming comedians back in the early ‘90s. In a new interview with People Magazine, Apatow talked about their time living together before they broke out into super stardom.

“It was a fun time because all we were doing every day was trying to write jokes and get up on stage at the Improv at night and tell those jokes,” Apatow explained to People. “We were very focused. We didn’t have much more to our lives. We had no responsibility whatsoever, and we were just hustling.”

For Apatow and the rest of the guys they were surrounded by, there wasn’t much doubt that Sandler was going to be successful. “We all knew Adam was going to make it,” Apatow said. “He was just remarkably funny to be around and had so much charisma. So we all thought it’s going to happen. We just are interested to see how it’s going to happen. And then it did.”

Not only did it happen, but it happened incredibly suddenly.

One day, Sandler announced he was going to audition for Saturday Night Live. “Then the next day he said, ‘I got it.’ Then he left me alone in the apartment,” Apatow remembered.

Apatow spoke to People to promote his forthcoming book Comedy Nerd: A Lifelong Obsession in Stories and Pictureswhich releases on October 28th. The book will feature tons of behind-the-scenes moments from Apatow’s long comedy career, including more tidbits about his time working with Sandler. They’ve long been collaborators — including for the 2009 film Funny People.

And it seems like, despite leaving Apatow high and dry in their shared apartment 35 years ago, the friendship never suffered for it. Sandler even wrote a blurb for the book: “Judd Apatow has put together an amazing scrapbook of his life and career. The best part? There’s a lot of pictures. And the stuff that isn’t pictures? You don’t even have to look at! Now if you do read the words, you’ll be delighted. But again, personally, I didn’t. Apatowww! You the best!!!”

Someone who can leave you high and dry on a New York City lease and still be your friend? That’s something special.
