This past weekend, Jared Leto starred in the movie that might just convince audiences to accept an artificial intelligence takeover of the film industry, so long as the robots promise to stop casting Jared Leto.

Tron: Ares is the third entry of the film franchise that began in 1982 with the Jeff-Bridges-starred Tron, and in those four decades since science-fiction fans got their first taste of the Grid, much has changed in both the movie industry and the world of technology. Sadly, most leading men of today are nowhere near Bridges-level, and digital facsimiles of human beings aren’t as far from reality in 2025 as they were in the age of the Commodore 64. As such, Tron: Ares director Joachim Rønning had his work cut out for him in turning the early 1980s’ vision for the future of technology into a sleek, modern and tasteful experience for today’s audience. 

Unfortunately for the Walt Disney Corporation, Tron: Ares has been both a box-office disappointment and a fiercely mixed experience for critics, one of whom titled their one-out-of-five-stars review, “Tron: Ares Is So Bad It Makes You Wish A.I. Would Hurry Up and Destroy Hollywood.”

However, while professional film critics pen treatises on Tron: Ares’ misguided attempt to give A.I. an almost-human face, the amateur moviegoers of Letterboxd have been much more brief in breaking down their distaste for an alleged sexual predator doing a “What if Skynet was good?” movie.
