Andrew Cuomo Scores Key Woody Allen Endorsement in New York Mayoral Race
We’re just months away from New York City’s mayoral election, and according to a recent poll, Zohran Mamdani has a 21-point lead over rival Andrew Cuomo.
This past weekend, Gov. Kathy Hochul penned a New York Times op-ed in support of Mamdani, but now it seems as though the disgraced former governor has his own surprise endorsement from a prominent New York celebrity. Unfortunately for Cuomo, it’s the also-disgraced Woody Allen.
Allen talked up Cuomo during a recent appearance on the podcast Honestly with Bari Weiss, which somehow lasted for over 90 minutes. In addition to discussing the allegations that Allen sexually assaulted his 7-year-old daughter in 1992, which Weiss casually referred to as “a lie,” the director also weighed in on the upcoming mayoral race.
Don't Miss
“I’m gonna vote, I’m gonna vote for Cuomo,” Allen proudly stated. “I feel Mamdani is perfectly nice. I think he’s fine. His heart’s in the right place. He wants nice things, but I think Cuomo will do a much better job. Cuomo will be better for New York. He’ll be much more efficient. He’ll just do a better job.”
It makes sense that Allen would be a fan of Cuomo, considering that the politician has historically been resistant to taxing the wealthy (Allen is said to be worth more than $100 million). And while some voters might be put off by the fact that Cuomo is an accused sexual predator, clearly that isn’t a problem for Allen.
And Allen and Cuomo have something else in common: They were both name-checked in one of Alec Baldwin’s way-too-dimly-lit anti-cancel culture rants on social media.
And also, come to think of it, both Allen and Cuomo have been the subjects of investigations by Allen’s conspicuously Sinatra-like star journalist son, Ronan Farrow.
Of course, it’s hard to imagine a public figure whose political opinion matters less than Allen’s right now. The Annie Hall director has been on a bit of a promotional tour lately in support of his first novel, which is about, get this, an anxious New York intellectual.
He’s already popped by Bill Maher’s weed smoke and malaise-filled man cave for an especially cringey Club Random interview, which found Allen praising Donald Trump’s acting skills. And he also Zoomed into a Russian film festival, only to get dunked on by Ukraine’s social media accounts.
Maybe Allen will be the first guest on Andrew Cuomo’s inevitable podcast after he loses.
