How Danny DeVito and Carol Kane’s Chemistry Changed the Plot of the ‘Always Sunny’ Season Finale
Though chicken heiress Sam won both Frank Reynolds’ heart and the final rose during It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Season 17 finale, the pair weren’t guaranteed to have a made-for-TV ending.
Always Sunny’s writers originally had a much different vision for Frank, Sam and her fellow Golden Bachelor competitor, the Hailey Welch-inspired “Cock Chewa.” They experimented with capping off the episode on a “darkly comedic” or an “even fatal note,” but ultimately decided against it after seeing the former Taxi co-stars’ chemistry.
“I imagine we’ll probably want to use both of them because they were so funny. In what capacity we use them, I have no idea,” Charlie Day said of the last-minute decision to keep both Sam and “Cock Chewa” around. “I would be very surprised if we walked into the room and were like, ‘Well, we’re done with those actors.’”
Don't Miss
Considering Day told The Hollywood Reporter that he envisions incorporating Kane into the show’s upcoming 18th season, it seems like Sam will see another Sunny day, a decision that would be welcome news to DeVito. “The writers understood that Carol knocked it out of the park,” DeVito said. “I’m looking forward to doing another show with her. We have our fingers crossed for that.”
Kane is also hoping for a Paddy’s Pub return. “It’s a gift to be doing that kind of stuff with someone you trust and know so long,” the actress said of reuniting with DeVito. “You can be open with them, and they can be open with you.”
You can also have such a strong connection with them that you make yourself totally indispensable — and worth tearing up whatever you had down on paper before.
