The McDonald’s in Germany Are Bringing Back ‘Rick and Morty’s Szechuan Sauce
Eight years after McDonald’s Mulan Szechuan Sauce emerged as the throwaway gag that could, evolving from a few offhand jokes in Rick and Morty’s Season Three premiere into two separate McDonald’s-sanctioned comebacks, the iconic dipping sauce may be primed for yet another grand return.
On Wednesday, a fan headed to the Rick and Morty subreddit with a new twist in the never-ending sauce saga, claiming that a seemingly similar condiment dubbed the “Szechuan Style Sauce” would be making its way to German McDonald’s locations.
Don't Miss
“McDonald’s is bringing back Szechuan Sauce,” they captioned a screenshot seemingly snapped from their fast-food app depicting several limited-edition international items soon to be for sale throughout Germany.
That said, I haven’t been able to independently verify whether or not these screenshots are legit. The McDonald’s Germany website lists many of the featured international items on their menu, but the Szechuan Sauce is conspicuously MIA — beyond that, it’s all German to me.
This uncertainty, however, didn’t stop Rick and Morty fans from sounding off on the item’s rumored return, several hitting the comments with a resounding “not again.” “It honestly wasn’t that good, at least the stuff from a few years ago,” wrote one commenter, noting that the product’s downfall came in its shockingly mild flavor profile. “I was expecting something spicy/peppery, but it was just a sweet soy sauce.”
They weren’t the only fan let down by Rick’s hyped-up description of the ‘90s snack either. “Just pick up a bottle of the real stuff at your local Asian grocery store, it’s good,” another advised. “The stuff at McDonald’s is not.”
Meanwhile, a third deemed the sauce’s resurgence as not just bad business, but also as a bad omen for the future of Rick and Morty. “Cancel the show,” they joked. “No point in going on now.”
