Ramin Djawadi: The 'Game Of Thrones' Composer That Sees Sound

Remember how you felt the first time you heard the Game of Thrones theme song? That chill up your spine, that pupil dilating thrill, that heart-pounding feeling that makes you go, “this nerd sh*t is good.” Ramin Djawadi is why you felt that way.

He really established himself composing the score for a little movie you may have heard of called Iron Man. He was scouted right out of college by none other than Hans Zimmer. THe man has worked with Guillermo del Toro, Michael Bay, RZA, Ellie Goulding, the list goes on. Those incredible, eerie symphonic covers of pop songs in Westworld? He produced those and wrote the theme song. He’s composed some of the biggest and best epic music of our lifetimes. And lucky for all the big budget, CGI swollen, battle soaked media that’s coming our way, he’s only getting better. Oh! Also, he has an actual super power.

Synesthesia is the phenomenon where individuals experience two senses simultaneously. Djawadi can “see” sound. When notes play colors pop into his mind. He didn’t realize this was out of the ordinary until his wife asked him what he thought about when he made music. Some people experience colors as taste or other combinations of senses doing duty. Only 2-4% of the world is estimated to have this rare genetic trait. And they’re probably all badass composers for the most successful TV show of all time. Oh, wait. Just my many Ramin? Yeah he rules.

He’s also from Germany, which doesn’t hurt, what with their long history of some of the best composers in the world. His talent and skill took him to Berklee College of Music in Boston and now, lucky for us and all of cinema, he’s working in L.A. full time. It was his love of film, particularly the Westerns he watched as a kid, that motivated him to come to the U.S. in the first place. Now that he’s here, we hope he stays forever, composing us an endless sea of incredible bops.
