Greetings, everyone! I am the Annoying What-If'er; the villainous wretch that challenges convenient generalizations and assumptions!
ReplyWhat if the young man in the MCR shirt is clinically depressed, and listens to their music because it has been shown to have therapeutic effects on suicidal individuals? Perhaps he doesn't feel he has the energy for a job due to the physical pain and fatigue that often accompany emotional distress? What if many of those cell phone minutes have been spent speaking to a dear relative or friend that lives far away? Or several frantic, midnight calls to hotlines that repeatedly talk him down when he feels he has no one else to turn too?
What if the boy in the North Face shirt comes from a family where both parents work long hours at demanding jobs, and he is upset that he'll have to do homework on Friday because the weekend is the only time he gets to spend any substantial amount of time with his mother and father? What if he hasn't started the essay yet not out of laziness, but because he is a perfectionist prone to procrastination and is genuinely intimidated by the assignment?
At least there's a chance that Perspective Man gave one young man release from the constant mental contest he had with Death, and the other teen will have both more time to work on his essay and time with his family because he will need to be hospitalized after the trauma of seeing his best friend punched into human slurry.
And what if he didn't?
Life is always better than we make it out to be. Perspective is always skewed.
ReplyThat doesn't mean our problems are imaginary.
Human brains have exactly one scale and we resize our experiences to fit. That said, I think that both parties are morons. The kids are stupid because there are benefits to the things that they have to be doing AND because they WILL have to deal with way worse crap in the future; and Perspective Man is a worthless scumbag because he is comparing different situations. Suffering is relative to the user, you caped twit. What might make one person stronger can actually kill that other guy standing by himself in the corner.
ReplyI think what most people are missing here is that these two idiots are complaining about stupid crap. You wanna call having to pay for your own cell phone minutes a life-sucking drag that will ultimately ruin your life? Fine, but please do the rest of us a favor and grow the f**k up. >.>
ReplyYes, I realize people have legitimate problems. Those mentioned are not. Just . . hush child.
Hey, MCR is good.
ReplyThe Funny part seems to have slipped in under the radar. He's not the Hero America wants.
ReplyHe's the Hero America Deserves. Ha Ha Ha
I don't mind being corrected when I get too uppity about my "great" problems. I understand that people don't LIKE it, but I think it's necessary every now and then. Like syringes *shudder*
ReplyThanks Perspective Man, your soliloquy has filled me with a sense of implicit wrongdoing brought on by my winning the Birth Lottery! I'm going to go to some tribe in Africa, badly attempt to teach them English, and build them shacks made of corrugated tin and cinderblocks. That way I can enjoy my privilege without feeling guilty for being white and American.
ReplyPeople who do this piss me off.
ReplyJust because someone has it worse off than you, doesn't mean that your problems are meaningless.
Hooray for Perspective Man!
ReplyCan I order a subscription?
ReplyThis guy, I like this guy.
ReplyLack empathy? Perspective Man will effing KILL you.
ReplyThis is incredibly stupid. There's always going to be someone worse off than you. Is perspective man going to tell the kids living on 2 bucks a day, that some kids are living in the wild picking berries to stay alive? Just because someone else has worse problems than you doesn't mean that yours aren't legitimate.
ReplyThat being said. . .the kids in this comic totally deserved what they got.
wouldve been better if you didnt play it safe at the end of your speech
I agree with the first part.
kids are self-centered, nothing new.
Replyholy shit. i was not expecting that last part...
ReplyMy usual response when someone says stuff about starving kids who would eat whatever unidentifiable s**t I'm not eating is to recommend that if they're really that concerned I'll give it to em and they can take it to those poor starving kids. Shit, I'll even offer to wrap it up for em.
ReplyBut then again, with my luck in a few years some rich douchebag is going to create some "charity" that offers to take gross foods to starving impoverished children, just so that he'll go down in history either as "that a*****e who eliminated the ability to sarcastically say someone should send the food I'm throwing away to poor kids" or possibly even worse as "that a*****e who keeps saying he's going to bring us food then brings us carts full of vienna sausages, canned chicken, brussel sprouts and black licorice." (seriously, I don't think I've ever met someone who likes black licorice. It's gross.) (Oh, and if you've never heard of vienna sausages, they're kind of like small, disembodied penises in a disgusting white half gel half fluid substance that I believe to be some kind of sauce comprised of semen...and it all comes lukewarm in a can)
I like black licorice. No, I'm not trolling.
Thanks for ruining what little likeability I had for Vienna Sausages...
i believe that (with proper funding and some weights or a gunship or something, you know whatever) that i could be perspective man!
ReplyDeal. I'll get to work building your gunship (or whatever, y'know, if I have the parts for that in my garage).
A billion people have an entire continent to themselves. If starvation, epidemics and warfare is all they can achieve - why should others get the blame for it? That strip is shockingly violent and pointless.
Reply Hide All See All 8 RepliesShockingly? Oh I don't know about that.
You have powerful insight. It must be something in the genes.
jAHfbgjshfbghjAAAAAAGH!! No, just no!! And dehydrated waffles!
Apparently KAPOW understood this strip more than Glyph. You don't need to take the blame for it, just be glad you aren't in that mess.
Bloody Mugabe.
I smell an objectivist.
I smell a whining little bitch.
It's not that simple, man. The reason they suffer from all that is because certain individuals and certain countries worked very hard to destabilize that continent.
I agree that other people shouldn't be blamed for what their ancestors did to them, but that's not the point Perspective Man wanted to get across. The point is that we, citizens of more developed parts of the globe, have grown so used to things like health care, access to food and high comparative wealth that we take them for granted and tend to just complain about how our lives suck when really, we should be thankful we don't have it as bad as people in other parts of the world. However, that doesn't make our problems meaningless. Kids are entitled to complain about homework and things like that and, often times, they end up really making someone's life shitty. I know people who had breakdowns during their last years of school because of their inability to deal with the enormous workload thrown at them and, at the same time, live a normal life.
I would hardly describe this is 'shockingly' violent.
