How to Decide Whether to Tell the Painful Truth [COMIC]
Honesty is not always the best policy. For instance, when you're talking to your boss, honesty is almost never a good idea ...

Basic Instructions is a twice weekly updating web comic that offers absurd advice on how to live your life. Starting this week, some of those updates will be happening here on Cracked.
Check out last week's look at How to Explain Men's Emotions with a Useful Analogy.

for some reason, i really hate bald guys with facial hair. thats why i hate this comic.
Reply Hide All See All 3 RepliesMaybe he had early male-pattern baldness and decided to "just f**k it" and went completely smooth?
My water polo coach looks almost exactly like this except his beard is like a foot long. He looks like a f*****g badass viking.
Oh crap. Now all I'm going to be able to think about is viking water polo. Probably involve a lot more killing. And the ball would be an explosive.
Holy s**t this is NOT funny Cracked !
ReplyGet this s**t off of my internet.
ReplySmarties as a placebo? HA! I've successfully sold bags of sugar as cocaine. People are f**king stupid.
Replyvery poor comedy...
ReplyWhy do you think so?
In Canada, Smarties are like large M&Ms, except if you hold them for more than two seconds, the colouring will stain into your hand for at least a month.
Reply Hide All See All 6 RepliesAs an addition, we have a candy called "Rockets" which are very similar to the American Smarties.
you serious? Smarties are delicious but in America, Smarties are little chalky pieces of crap called Rockets that american's blindly call "smarties" !?!?! WE'LL SAVE YOU AMERICAN BROTHERS!!
So true.
so wait, we're eating "rockets" and we're missing out on "smarties"
Wait, are we eating Smarties or Rockets? And are they big or small or...I think you all lost me there.
my favourite thing about smarties a lot of people dont seem to notice... and its not advertised on the pack or anything.
the orange ones are orange flavoured
isnt comedy kind of the root of the word comic? wheres the funny?
ReplyIf you find this funny, it isn't because you're more intelligent...than anybody. It's because you're pompous enough to feel some sort of sense of superiority at haven "gotten the joke"...which was bland. This comic didn't deserve the "Oh, I see what ya did there." I gave it.
Reply Hide All See All 7 RepliesActually sir, if someone finds this funny it is simply because their sense of humor is different from yours. One is not explicitly better than another, and I wonder if you catch the inherent irony of your statement. If telling those who laughed that it is because we are pompous, you have made yourself into an arrogant bastard of sorts. Feeling you are able to pass judgment on everyone else. I only type this cause I like this comic.
The PP of "have" is "had," smartass. If you're going to mock people for having opinions different from yours, at least do it in style!
The joke was obvious. If you didn't find it funny, fine but posting something like "anyone who likes this just likes it because they think they're so smart for getting the joke" just shows that your the only one who didn't get it.
Aren't you clever, pointing out a grammatical that isn't there and hoping people skimming through the comments will take it at face value. Of course, even if he had made a mistake, siding with you just because of that would be pretty stupid.
The present participle (gerund) of "have," the form you need here is "having." Nice try, though.
Needless to say I found this hilarious.
in fact the word was supposed to be "having", grammer correct fail
I laughed loudly...of course, I knew what placebos, and smarties, were without having to look it up.
Reply"It's kind of obscure so don't feel bad if you did."
Is the rest of what you want to say hipster.
Just found this site today and I think it is GENIUS>
ReplyHowever, this particular article sucks monkey balls- total fail
What the f**k is this s**t?
ReplyI'm confused, and I don't even got a boner...
Replywow, not cracked-worthy at all. not even a chuckle. just a sad, sloppy, incoherent mess.
Reply Hide All See All 7 RepliesIt's a commentary on HMOs, Placebonol is a new miracle drug, but his health plan won't actually pay for it. So, they substituted candy, and he's dumb enough to believe it's working. Kind of a political statement, guess Scott believes the Obama plan will make Placebonol available for everyone.
thanks for the explanation. however, I maintain that if a comic requires that much explanation it really just defeats the purpose.
Thanks for the explanation.
diphycue, look up what a placebo is.
diphycue, you either win or fail, I'm not sure which :D
I'm guessing diphycue wins, while chambles91 and Woobie fail spectacularly. Can't be entirely certain though.
I found this string of replies funnier than the comic itself. Which I found quite funny.
after reading a comment explaining what smarties are I find this somewhat chuckleworthy
Replystill I don't want to look at this again
that was f**king shameful, bring some funny comics to the table, or just give seanbaby a raise, cuz his have never sucked as much dick as this.
Reply Hide All See All 4 RepliesHUURRR DUUUURRR
LAWNOME SMASH
LAWNOME MAKE LATENTLY h**oPHOBIC JAB AT EXPENSE OF CARTOONIST
HUUURRRR
To assert that Seanbaby should get a raise is to admit to not knowing a damned thing about what is funny. I shall dismiss your comment accordingly.
Also, the last panel was awesome.
This s**t wasn't funny. Better gabba?
Oh hey I'm not criticizing anyone for their opinions...I just resent the h**ophobia.
What are smarties?
Reply Hide All See All 3 RepliesSmarties are like chocolate M&Ms. You can get them in the UK which leads me to believe this comic is from the UK.
Oh the shame.
M&M's are chocolate... Also, smarties the candy here are little powdery sweet-tarts.
There's an American candy named Smarties also. It's basically fruit-flavoured sugar that could conceivably pass as a pill.
At which point am I supposed to laugh?
ReplyThe point when you complain about free stuff.
I find the bald, bearded guy curiously sexy...
ReplyNot funny at all.
ReplyDidn't even make sense as a non-funny "comic."
oh get some Placebonol already, sheesh
I've always liked BASIC INSTRUCTIONS when I've stumble'd it, but never felt compelled to read it regularly. Glad to see it on Cracked, because I'll read it much more regularly.
