Among Trek fans, there's a well-known bit of lore called the "Star Trek Movie Curse": namely, that even-numbered installments in the franchise are usually great, and odd-numbered installments unspeakably awful. A bit of a blanket statement? Sure. But it's also mostly true. Mostly. The Classics

Star Trek: First Contact
The Borg go back in time to prevent the founding of the Federation by destroying the Phoenix, Earth' first warp-capable vessel, and the Enterprise follows. Picard and Data kill the Borg Queen just in time to ensure the successful flight of the Phoenix. Vulcans stop in for a visit, and everybody gets loaded and parties down to rockabilly music. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
A super-powerful alien comes to future Earth to touch base with its good buddies the humpback whales, only to lose its shit when it finds out they're all extinct. Eager to stop Earth's destruction, Kirk and crew go back in time to present day Earth to retrieve some whales; Spock chooses to do this in a linen bathrobe, for some reason. The whales tell the alien probe that everything's cool. "Let's all just chill out, okay?" The alien, embarrassed about having made such a big scene, gets its chick and peels out of Earth's orbit in its Corvette without further incident, Zeppelin blasting from the speakers. I have no desire to be misinterpreted as defending Trek V (spits on carpet), but for Nichelle Nichols, there is no "past her prime." Well okay, she's 76, but she's still dumbfoundingly lovely, and 20 years ago, yeah, if anyone could pull that scene off, it's Nichols.
With the mindboggling number of Trek nerds that read Cracked, I probably don't have to point out why Cochrane looked different in his episode of TOS; it was explained in the episode. Remember Kirk and Spock are 160 years give or take past the flight of the Phoenix. Cochrane explained he was a sad, lonely, dying old man when he jumped into that warp-equipped shuttle and took off for parts unknown. He landed on that planet, the Companion fell in loooooove with him, and repaired his body back to the age of 30 for him. And removed his shins apparently (not to mention making him a rather better-looking guy), but nevermindthatnow.
Anyone who doesn't think that First Contact was the best movie is a sinner.
nemesis was cool, imo. that is all.
It's funny watching Star Trek: Generations after having played Fallout 3. I keep expecting Soren to finish his lines with "…dear America".
Nice to see a Trek commentary that actually has a sense of humor, and I generally agree with the order, if not always the 'rational' of the rankings. But in the comment on Star Trek: The Motion Picture please make a correction. 2001: A Space Odyssey came out in 1868, 11 years before Star Trek: The Motion Picture (and 2 years after the series premiered). Thanks.
I enjoyed the big, culminating space battle in Nemesis. Almost worth watching just for that. Almost.
None of the Trek movies can be considered particularly good. I recommend the novelizations - they even made V interesting.
I agree with all the lists, though; the movies are just where they should be. Two and four always were my favorites.
the voyage home really wasnt that good, it should be in a different list.

While nothing on this site is anything like reliable, 2001 was released in the 60's and Star Trek: the Motion Picture was released in 1979. The special effects were probably due to Star Wars instead.
Final Frontier had Kirk asking "What does God need with a spaceship?" which was pwnage!

What I can't figure out is why are all the esses (S's) missing from all of the words with apostrophes. Are they the victims of some sort of weird textual transporter accident or are you just lazy?
