20 Telltale Signs a Movie Is Gonna Suck

Without throwing yourself on the sacrificial pyre of the spoiler gods, you never really know if a movie is gonna be good. Trailers, word of mouth and Rotten Tomatoes can only go so far, so it’s always totally possible that a poorly-marketed movie ends up being one of your faves or one that seems directly up your alley drags you down into a metaphorical prison full of murder crabs. Yes, that was a specific reference to Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Never again.

But there are often indications that, if you know how to spot them, will let you know to start speed-eating your popcorn because what you’re watching might become so insufferable you’ll be forced to beat a hasty retreat. (One hint: It’s a new Harry Potter movie. Should have known.) When user fuzzyloulou asked r/AskReddit, “What’s the first sign that a movie is going to suck?,” Reddit provided a whole list of them for you. Isn’t that nice?

one_hundred_coffees 7mo ago The trailer is just a video of people reacting to seeing the movie.
Maxhousen 7mo ago The trailer doesn't actually tell you what the movie is about.
KeepGoing655 7mo ago Whole movie is shown in the trailer.
TheStandingDesk 7mo ago When the tone changes significantly between the first trailer and the last trailer.
sayziell 7mo ago When the critics say it's an adventure unlike any other or something similar.
yhpargotohpts 7mo ago Limited access to critics. That's ALWAYS a giveaway.
xxxhotpocketz 7mo ago If a horror movie is PG13 then it's probably gonna suck
Awesomedude33201 7mo ago Their only selling point is that they have (insert famous actor)
ZookeepergameOk2759 7mo ago 14 production company logos at the start of the film.
JumpGlittering8120 7mo ago When there's a sex scene in the first five minutes of the movie
nakanampuge 7mo ago 10 minutes in and the screen is still too dark.
WYATTPURPP 7mo ago Anything that says it's going to be the comedy movie of the year, it usually isn't even the comedy movie of the day.
ddhmax5150 7mo ago It's a medieval type movie but the actors and actresses sound like they are auditioning for The Californians SNL skit.
CaptainPrower 7mo ago Premiere at the beginning of the year. Some exceptions to this, but usually the studios save the ones they know are gonna kick ass for the fall.
xAnomaly92 7mo ago Edited 7mo ago An actual useful answer would be, if there is a lot of verbal exposition in the beginning. Like the plot background and crcumstances are randomly explained by the characters (Honey, you know, we have to go to your gradparents funeral now, as they died last week in the big fire at KFC.). Like noone would say this and it is obviously meant for the audience. This is a sign of lazy writing and probably the rest won't be written that well either.
plowerd 7mo ago From two of the twelve writers of Scary Movie
fomalhottie 7mo ago I don't do that anymore. I'm retired. But you're the best. If I'm gonna do this... I'm gonna do this MY way.
Edited 7mo ago C_arpet 7mo ago In the UK there's a rule that the more advertising you see for it, that it probably won't live up to the hype. The death signal for a movie is if you see it advertised on the side of a bus.
bonerland69 7mo ago Some stupid viral marketing attempt at making it controversial by saying THEY don't want you to see this movie! Red flag that movie is going to suck.
Skapti 7mo ago I don't know if this happens in other countries, but in the UK you occasionally get TV spots where they have mini-interviews with members of an audience who've just watched the film. So it'll be filmed in a cinema lobby and be like What did you think of the film? and there'll be a family of four going Oh it was great, really funny, just perfect for all the family!. When you see one of these you know it's going to be absolute dogshit.
