There’s an art to a good plot twist, a careful line that must be walked. You don’t want to telegraph it, obviously, but you also don’t want it to come so far out of nowhere that it doesn’t make any sense. At least, not if you don’t want rabid fanboys sending you angry screeds in their own fluids to your home address for years to come.
If you do it right, though, a plot twist can still piss a viewer off — just in a good way. For Redditor YaBoyJuliusCaesar, it was in Vertigo, when James Stewart finds out the wife of the client he was investigating was actually his mistress posing as his wife. “My mom finished watching something else on TCM when I was like 10,” they told r/AskReddit. “I remember going to school and telling people about it expecting them to know about it.”
They then asked, “When’s the last time you had to pause the movie or put the book down because the plot twist got you good?” and the resultant answers couldn’t help but be filled with twists and turns.
