The Two Ways to Get Your Views Heard at G20
Every time world leaders meet for a G-something conference, thousands of protesters are sure to show up and burn some cars (as we saw at last week's G20 meeting). Why? Well, the reasoning goes something like this...

Replyas a loyal cracked reader for say... two years now, almost 3, all i have to say is this: please stop half-assing articles. there has been an influx of "articles" like this one, consisting of a half-assed chart that appears to be designed by a retarded ginger child, and nothing else. these short charts used to be thoroughly entertaining, and recently i've been let down. please get back to the superior level of quality this website USED to have.
ReplyHaha! Casual racism!
As a Cracked reader I will say this, That mess happened right outside the window where I'm writing this. How crazy was it having CNN showing my front door and fools misbehaving. And because I was there at Queen and Spadina I can say this. White well-fed Iphone having fools are not where the revolution will be televised.
Reply...that's because the revolution will not be televised.
It will be tweeted.
A individual can effect change thru leading by example. Of course, that takes far more effort and protracted dedication than smashing store windows.

pwned
Sadly, this all goes to show that people are far more concerned about technicalities than they are about the bigger picture. People are starving across the world? f**k that, this bloke's using the wrong spelling.
Farraway was right earlier. Also, JimmyJohnson gave the wrong definition for affect and still is no more better at knowing how to use affect/effect.
And Ratchman...good observation. :D
RIOT!!!!1
@thomaseo - If lifting the defintion straight from the Random House College Dictionary differs from your opinion, you're free to explain why... Instead of just throwing out I don't know how to use the definition... btw - the only reason I went to such lengths to correct farraway, is this person joined strictly to correct my definition of "effect". Thanks.
An individual.
I don't really care, but it seemed appropriate since your original statement is under such scrutiny.
Affect
–verb (used with object)
1.
to act on; produce an effect or change in: Cold weather affected the crops.
2.
to impress the mind or move the feelings of: The music affected him deeply.
3.
(of pain, disease, etc.) to attack or lay hold
Just because I have no soul and wish to see you bicker about it further.
For the record, "affect" has two main meanings:
- Have an effect on; make a difference to
and
- Pretend to have or feel (something)
However, "effect" is also appropriate:
- Cause (something) to happen; bring about
affect and effect can both be used as verbs. When someone affects a change, it is indirect. They are influencing or altering a change already taking place.
However, when someone effects a change, it is a direct action. They are causing or initiating that change. Someone could effect a change then affect that same change in order to get a different result.
I hate fake anarchists so much more after watching videos of these riots. Let me explain something to the idiots out there, anarchy is not about wearing black and a V mask (it was a movie with nothing but eye candy and don't even pretend that you actually read the graphic novel you idiots) and breaking s**t, like the windows of small businesses. Anarchy is about communities deciding whats best for the community, these dumb punks couldn't survive in such a world because they would be beaten to death after trying to beat other people to death. You can complain about "police oppression" all you want but what I saw in the videos was riot police backing away from a chanting destructive crowd while using nothing but occasional tear gas. Anyone with half a brain and without silly restrictions would be beating these idiots to a pulp when they start to make life harder for regular people.
Reply Hide All See All 13 RepliesThey complain that the police are evil, a cop gets filmed hitting someone and he lets them film. These guys see you filming them, they take your camera and spray paint over the lens or break it (how creative)
This whole idiotic generation I'm a part of needs a good lead shower.
Amen to that. They're mostly just over privileged punk kids who drive to their private schools in BMWs.
"Anarchy is about communities deciding whats best for the community..."
Uuuuh...please look up the definition of anarchy.
Anarchy is the individual deciding what is best for the individual with the assumption that the individual will make decisions for the benefit the community - although these decisions aren't required by any larger group or body to be "for the best".
KillerL1ama don't take the definition of anarchy too literally. While ethimologically it means something like "absence of government", what derelix is saying is about anarchy as a political and philosophycal thing, there's a lot to read about that before making comments, take a look at bakunin's or proudhon's writings for instance.
Does the fact that this is a comedy website escape you people?
There are a bunch of different types of anarchism. From Anarcho-Capitalism- do whatever you want, to Anarcho-Capitalism- think "pure" communism.
um... who gives a s**t?
random_aeternal
Good point. From now on I'm a Theocrat. Technically that means that I support a government with priests ruling in the name of a god or gods, but I think it means that I support the death penalty for descriptivist retards.
I think derelix hit the nail on the head.
But then I'm a "f**king moron" so what do I know?!
Ugh. Another example of how people are obsessed with technicalities rather than the bigger picture. Do we care about the riot? f**k no, but this person has made an essential error in being slightly wrong about the literal definition of a word.
As to the original poster: there's an air of superiority that runs through your text. The reference to V for Vendetta is phrased in a way that exposes the fact that you thought the film was s**t because it wasn't exactly the same as the book, and therefore inferior. The inference then is that these rioters borrowed the iconic mask from the film, because they were 'inferior'. The thought that someone in that crowd might have actually borrowed the image from the book has never occurred to you, has it? I'm not defending the rioters here, but I do take umbrage to any person who feels themselves to be superior.
As for the riot, I am afraid that these things are inevitable when you congregate people together, and then pit an adversarial force against them (and no matter how much training the police have, the police suffer the same emotions as the protestors, which only inflames the situation). Anyone who has been in one of these scenarios will appreciate the madness of crowds.
If you were in that crowd, you'd probably find yourself doing the same thing, and then rationalising your experiences after the fact.
It's easy to condemn people for acting like morons, but crowds are dangerous things, and opinions are incendiary. Put the two together and then try and restrain them from expressing these things and you will guarantee a fight. They could well be spoiled children, but to dismiss them so easily is to underestimate the nature of group dynamics.
Police tactics should be adapted to shepherd people, rather than contain them. If you shove people into an increasingly tight space, people get aggressive. You move them into open areas, where they have enough room to move, and riots become less likely. Just think about how you feel rammed inside a bar that's overpopulated compared to being sat in a pleasant garden with the same number of people.
The cynical among us could argue that if we wanted to discredit the protestors, then they should be placed in a situation that makes the likelihood of them rioting much higher, then when they riot, we can stamp on them hard, squashing dissent. You may argue that such thoughts are 'conspiracy nutjob' territory, but I am merely arguing what I would do if I were in their shoes. We all lie and manipulate people to some degree, for an honest man has no tact or diplomacy.
@ vitaldose
Wait... This is a website? f**k.
"Ugh. Another example of how people are obsessed with technicalities rather than the bigger picture. Do we care about the riot? f**k no, but this person has made an essential error in being slightly wrong about the literal definition of a word."
You're acting like there's essentially no difference between "communities deciding whats best for the community" and "a state of disorder due to absence or nonrecognition of authority." They aren't the same thing at all and derelix is trying to defend his retarded political views by ignoring all the problems with anarchy and only focusing on one positive aspect of it.
Then dumbasses like random_aeternal try to justify these lies. Then a*****es like you pretend to not be smug bastards but still go on these retarded, grandiloquent rants.
In short: f**k anarchists.
Political affiliation aside (cuz' it's not helping), there were honest John & Jane Does that worked an honest life/job as proprietors to afford those businesses and cars that the near-sighted rioters helped to destroy/vandalize.
With such righteous indignation and lack of actual strategy or credible endgame, rioting was the byproduct. Sadly, this has only hurt their position moreso rather than bolster whatever political platform they choose to endorse. Tragically, it would seem none in many, not all applications, rather, the violent actions taken seem to speak for platforms they oppose only.
ie) this systems sucks, lets fight it!
Okay, gotcha'. What alternative measure or fix do you propose?
*brick*
I don't like this one. It seems to say that the only way for the common citizen to create positive change is with violence (whether the author intended it or not), and I don't think I need to tell you how dangerous that is.
Reply Hide All See All 6 RepliesOh, and ChrisLawrence? Would you mind telling us WHO admitted that the rioters were paid by the government, and where? Maybe you could tell us how 9/11 was an inside job while you're at it!
You're a f**king moron.
The only thing this chart shows is that you won't get media attention unless you riot/protest. AT THE G20 SUMMIT.
There are tons of other ways to affect change....
Quick change (and by quick I mean less than a generation)often involves violence even if the protestors are non-violent. In my opinion only violence and violent displays will get the most people to notice you. How violent said party is depends. I really don't feel gay people will ever be treated like with same rights as other Americans unless until they at least have wide-scale demonstrations (i.e. the March on Washington w/ MLK)Trust me violence will ensue.
I did say "SEEMS to say", didn't I!?
Also I'd rather have lasting change than quick.
Lamentably, human society is slow to change, and the resistance to any kind of change is tremendous. Just look at how certain workplace policies get implemented, and how much time and effort people invest in denigrating it.
Rapid change requires force, and force and violence are inexorably linked. This isn't always so obvious, but think about the way traffic is managed. How many pedestrian crossings have been placed as a direct result of an accident? It may have been planned for a while, but the fact that a child was run over and killed in that area has forced the authority to hasten its construction. Think about the area you live in, and you might just remember something similar to this example. Now start thinking about the last pedestrian crossing you used. Do you remember when it was placed there? And had there been an accident at that spot not long beforehand? You'd be surprised how many of those things are built on top of human suffering.
Alternatively, how many laws have been changed as a panic measure to some violent act. Often, these changes are made without proper consideration, but they must be made, as not to act would be seen as condoning the crime. Even if the law is blindingly obvious, it has usually taken some drastic event to get it implemented.
It is an unfortunate truth that, in situations like this, that it takes some violent act, whether intentional or not, to effect change a lot quicker than if we just leave it to the standard procedure.
Society has been built on human blood and suffering. It is important that we all remember that, as an appreciation for it makes us more considerate about our own approach to change.

Replythe rioting was started by people paid by the government so they could crack down and get rid of all the pesky protesters they didnt want around. the same thing happened at the WTO in Seattle. it was ADMITTED that the rioters that cause the damage were part of an operation sponsored by delta force
Reply Hide All See All 3 RepliesFail troll is fail.
Using passive language like "It was admitted that..." rather than "[name] admitted that..." makes your argument look weak and stupid because it is so vague and without evidence.
Certainly, if I held the belief that these protestors were a threat to the way that I do business, I would certainly consider my options in discrediting them, although you can easily do it without bribing anyone.
But let's be real here. Although it is a possibility that certain people or organisations could manipulate the situation to discredit their 'rivals' (and let's not be fooled here: business has never been anything other than cut-throat), the protestors are not as big a threat as some people like to think.
Not when apathy is the norm.
Our tacit acceptance of the way things are is enough of a force in itself that it more than outweighs anything people who want to effect change can ever do themselves.
Of course, never rule out the idea that people can panic once they see that the tide is turning against them, and that popular opinion is siding with their opponents. People are capable of anything when they get desperate.
However, if you're going to present a controversial standpoint as a fact, then you'd better have evidence, or source material.
Copy this link: leasticoulddo com/comic/20100629, it is a more humorous summing up of the situation at the g20 I believe. I'm gonna have to pull a spam-bot and remove the . in front of com, so just add that back I guess.
Replyyou deserve one internet my good sir.
Remember to soak your clothing in vinegar to counteract tear gas.
Reply Hide All See All 4 RepliesAlso cats won't mark their territory on you.
That will do f**k all as tear gas has nothing to do with your clothes. If it hits skin, you will feel instant pain. If it hits your eyes or you breath it, you are DONE.
If you want to not be affected by CS, constant exposure will do it. No, seriously, gas the ever loving crap out of yourself and you will get used to the effects eventually.
I'm with Moose on this one. There is a reason why it is used instead of other gases.
As he states, the only way to counteract it is exposure to it. This is what the military do (and even then, you can't shield yourself from its effects for long).
Best of all, wear a HAZMAT suit. Of course, they're not as cool-looking when you're parading in front of the cameras.

Why are there two guys in Guy Fawkes masks in the graphic for rioting? The Scientology protests were, with the exception of the occasional nutjob, peaceful and lawful.
Reply Hide All See All 5 RepliesThe Guy Fawkes masks also struck me as odd because I remember that those protests were reported by the media to be extremely tame and typified more by their Rick Rolling than any sort of violence.
Possibly its a throwback to the ORIGINAL Guy Fawkes, the gentleman who tried to blow up a building, or to V.
Guy Fawkes masks aren't just for Anonymous. They're also exceedingly popular with Truthers and groups like the ISM.
because many g20 protesters and rioters were wearing them. It's hip now. Like trench coats use to be.
BTW they were not always peaceful, they just claimed that the rock and egg throwing was done by Scientology spies who infiltrated the crowd. Nobody want's responsibility anymore.
Because whoever did the chart probably wore one in a protest and felt all edgy and cool

ReplyDraws attention only to eyewitnesses. Cannot be show on TV, Dude.
Censor blur?
Um, and the article isn't going to talk about the riot, or give facts about the G20, or explain what the riot was about? Really?
Reply Hide All See All 7 RepliesThat's because even the protestors don't know what they're actually rioting about. "Evil establishments" and other such regurgitated crap doesn't qualify as a valid point of contempt when they can't tell you the first thing about what the meetings are actually about. Hell, I'd put money on the fact that if you were to ask a random protestor to name even 10 of the 20 nations involved, they'd draw a blank. Actually, I'd be surprised if they could even how many countries' leaders are involved in the G20...like asking people what colour Napoleon's white horse was.
I don't agree with rioting, though I think they do know why they are rioting.
They are afraid of the banks and want to be heard. The way media is today, a group, lacking power has to go extreme, like rioting.
The pic above is funny, but ironicly true.
I dislike this trend of having an "article" that is just an infographic. Cracked is getting kinda lazy. Also, you misunderstand irony, BlueBasketMann.
"afraid of the banks"? That isn't exactly a well thought out argument to protest about. There ARE legitimate arguemnts worth protest regarding the G20, but thoise guys in masks, are not making them. Their antics take away from the real protests, and drag everyone down to their level of crazy.
Legitimate arguments worth protest? Like what? So was this just the annual World Bank protest gone wrong or something? What's wrong with 20 nations coming together to try to fix a problem through diplomacy?
So I'm pretty sure this is JUST an infographic, not an article, as the last few infographics have had ads at the bottom for people whocan craft infographics, not people who can craft an infographic and then write a full page article for a bunch of Cracked-stalking pissants to bash. You want an article, write it yourself, slackers!
