In film school they'll tell you that a movie is written three times-- The first time is on the page by a broke screenwriter just trying to churn out the required pages. The second time is in shooting, where director and actor egos as well as the realities of budgets and production schedules reshape the whole thing all over again. Finally, the movie is written again in the edit-- Making sure the pacing is brisk and the information is clear. Sometimes that means taking scenes that no longer fit in the finished product and throwing them in the garbage. Here are some of the most interesting examples of scenes that didn't end up making it into some of your favorite movies… and had they not, would have changed them significantly for better or worse. We don't have a multiverse view of reality to see all the possibilities, but we'd take a solid guess that very few of these movies would be any better with the cut material left in.

C-3PO is a cunning warrior. In this deleted scene from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, during the escape from Hoth Base C-3PO takes a second to rip a sign off a door. 1 Hannibal

In the original ending of Hannibal (2001) Clarice Starling lets Lecter kiss her as a distraction to handcuff his wrist to hers. Lecter uses a knife to cut his hand instead of Starling's. Lecter sacrificed himself in this ending for his love for her. In the deleted alternate ending, the kiss is never interrupted by the handcuffing.
