Creator Wes Craven said the idea came after he heard about the legend of Sawney Bean, a seemingly mythical leader of a cannibalistic clan of Scottish rebels. The story goes that Bean met a witch named Agnes Douglas and together they lived in a cave, raised a large and incestuous family, and survived on laying traps and eating their prey (that were sometimes human).
