Rob Mac is so synonymous with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Mac McDonald that he changed his surname to match his on-screen persona, but he wasn’t the first pick for his character’s signature mediocrity.
In her new book, It’s (Almost) Always Sunny in Philadelphia: How Three Friends Spent $200 to Create the Longest-Running Live-Action Sitcom in History and Help Build a Network, author Kimberly Potts details how the role of Mac was initially offered to actor David Hornsby, who fans know today as Rickety Cricket.
At first, “McElhenney had his hands full with writing, directing, and producing the (show), overseeing the whole enterprise, and holding one of the cameras,” per the book. But after stepping in for Hornsby a few times while shooting the pilot, Mac ultimately decided to take over his now-eponymous role.
As Potts looks to Always Sunny’s past, Glenn Howerton is thinking about its future. Shortly after attending the show’s 20th anniversary celebration in Los Angeles, the FXX star headed to social media to hint at what may be next for The Gang. “I’m as proud of it as any season we’ve ever put out,” he captioned a photo of himself posing on the red carpet alongside Mac and their fellow costars Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito. “And don’t worry… this isn’t the end.”
Like Always Sunny, the best is yet to come with these hilarious tweets, the funniest of which include those about the meaning of a political science degree, a role for Mike Faist and a punishment for horses.
