You can have reservations about Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson’s “his ‘n hers plastic surgery addictions,” but you can’t question their commitment to their craft.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is famed for its over-the-top, sometimes offensive storylines, but “Mac Finds His Pride” is an earnest episode meant to be taken seriously — a point that McElhenney was clear about with choreographers Alison Faulk and Leo Moctezuma.
“He wanted to make sure that the character had an actual, real, heartfelt moment. It was so important to Rob and also to Mac. It was also important to Rob and his family — his sister and his mother and his brother are queer — and he really wanted to be very clear that he was not making a joke out of it. This was a genuine, real expression of how he was feeling.”
Olson has also leaned into real, genuine expression. In a recent interview with Deadline, she explained her passion for ensuring High Potential’s Morgan Gillory was a more “well-rounded” character than fans are used to seeing her play on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or Hacks. But that doesn’t mean she’s abandoned humor completely. It’s just a little more realistic.
“The best character-driven dramatic pieces of material, whether it’s TV or movies, have comedy sprinkled in, because that’s life. There are funny moments and there are snarky things to be said that can be funny, and you have to be able to laugh in dark times. That’s just the way the world works; it’s also just more fun to watch.”
