20 Hometown Habits People Can’t Seem to Shake

Nothing wrong with a little hoarding…
20 Hometown Habits People Can’t Seem to Shake

You know what they say: Wherever you go, there you are.

That sounds like some Captain Obvious stuff, but it basically means you can’t escape yourself. You can fling yourself to the far corners of the Earth, from the Russian tundra to somewhere way nicer in Brazil, but you’ll always bring everything you’ve learned where you come from with you.

For many Redditors, that’s a big ol’ “ope.” For user GreenerPeach01, “a clear indicator will always be my English accent and language,” they told r/AskReddit. “I grew up in a very mixed environment with people of different nationalities, and I developed a certain type of accent when speaking in English, and even certain slang words that I heard around me. When speaking in my native language, I can automatically switch to a raw native accent, and then switch back like it’s second nature.”

They then asked, “What’s one trait you have that is a clear indicator/personal reminder of where you grew up?” and their fellow Redditors were more than happy to get super personal with them in return.

Phlexor72 . 2mo ago I run the tap for a bit to make sure the water isn't brown. It hasn't been brown for over 40 years.
False-Impression8102 . . 2mo ago Reticence to make friends at work. I grew up in a company town and witnessed a lot of corporate backstabbing. I don't gossip at work and keep my private life separate.
Colorcrazed . 2mo ago If I'm not conscientious of it, I cuss like a sailor every other word. Grew up like a hood rat in a poor city neighborhood and the offense for the sake of offense occasionally leaks through.
Ornery-Investment-58 . 2mo ago Whenever I go back to visit my folks they always say you never used to pronounce X this way or that, I didn't raise you that way. Yes mum, I'm sorry I say creek now instead of crik or roof instead of ruff.
NotADoorMatNoMoore . 2mo ago Hoarding a little. I'm not fit for the TV show hoarders but I tend to get attached to things with two excuses, one that I might need them in the future, and two that we don't waste anything. I grew up low to lower-middle class so we needed to save every penny.
letsalldropvitamins e 2mo ago Complete respect/admiration for nature. I grew up in the countryside surrounded by farms and was obsessed with Sir David Attenborough. I also got to see fly tipping from a young age and what that does to areas of natural beauty.
Waterproofbooks . 2mo ago I wear flip flops everywhere. Flip flops are just fine for every day wear, work, out to dinner, dancing, whatever!!! I have everyday flops, old dirty flops, nice flops, beach flops, around the house flops..... Also, please don't call them thongs, those are underwear
Gillybby11 . 2mo ago The jargon I use on a daily basis. I grew up rural NSW to a mother who grew up rural VIC, and I can especially hear my childhood when I'm talking to my 6yo stepdaughter. Oi, ratbag, c'mere, got Vegemite on your face like a feral. Ya not going out there lookin' like no one loves ya, bloody dag.
Theobroma1000 . 2mo ago I didn't realize this was a growing up in Phoenix thing until a perceptive Redditor mentioned it, but I always run outside when it rains. If I can't, I go to a window. Kept me busy until I got used to it when I lived in Seattle for a while.
gottahavethatbass . 2mo ago I give directions using cardinal directions. You go south on broadway, then east on first street. It drives people nuts but it makes sense when you live next to a mountain range
iamaprettykitty 2mo ago Apparently I have drinking habits that are red flags for alcoholism in many places outside of Wisconsin.
