Shane Gillis finally has someone to blame for his awful SNL opening monologue.
The comic reflected on his tone-deaf hosting stint during an appearance on the Smartless podcast, and argued that pop-music fans — not his date rape jokes or admittedly racist punchlines — led to his live TV disaster. “Tate McRae was the musical guest, so the audience was like 20-year-old chicks just in the front, and I’m up there talking about Shelby Foote and Ken Burns and the Civil War. They had no idea — just some ogre walked out on the stage and started talking about Shelby Foote,” Gillis claimed.
Being obtuse may come naturally to Gillis, but it’s not Glenn Howerton’s forte. In a recent sitdown with People, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star revealed that he struggled while taking on the “naive and slightly oblivious” role of Ethan Corbin III in Netflix’s new dark comedy, Sirens. “I sort of pride myself on being the exact opposite of that in the real world,” he explained, noting that he’s nothing like his on-screen persona. “I try really hard to understand how my actions affect other people and not move through the world in an oblivious manner.”
