23 Terrifying Times People Thought ‘I Have To Get Out of Here’

Despite the fact that our prey days are long behind us, we still have the instincts that served us well when we were regularly walking beneath jaguars. When something feels sour, our brain is excellent at sounding the alarm, and more often than not, it’s for good reason.

A thread on Reddit asked users to share some of the moments that had their brain blaring sirens and quickly choosing flight over fight, which is my personal preference of the two options as well, given you’re less likely to lose teeth by running away. Read their stories below and know that if you ever find yourself in the same spot: start sprinting.

_captaintripz . 2y ago | unknowingly walked up next to a mountain lion one morning on a hike. And I've never felt true fear til that moment.
hermanalexie 2y ago I used to be a part of a rapidly growing cult. I knew I needed to leave when they started convincing teenagers to recruit kids at their high schools.
joykilled 2y ago My friends had a friend in high school we called The Dad. If he ever felt uncomfortable at a party and wanted to leave, we would follow. Не had the best instincts and saved us from the police, random fights and other foul drama many a time.
yeahsheskrusty 2y ago Edited 2y ago I was walking home one night after the bar, on a long semi lit street. There was a man walking a fair peice back yelling at me to stop, he wanted to talk to me etc. I just kept walking thinking just a drunk dude NBD. A cab pulled up to me and stoped and asked if the guy walking was my boyfriend. I told him know I have never seen him before. The cabby told me to get in the car because that guy paid him $50 to go around to block and

2y ago Was trapped in a naval vessel with a serious СО leak. I could feel my chest getting tight and it felt like I was choking but I could still inhale/exhale.
DryEyes4096 2y ago | once took a wrong turn on a street in Chicago from a pretty decent neighborhood somewhere around Archer and Harlem. Anyways, I don't know how we ended up where we did but I was like 18 driving my Dad's Toyota Camry through a large group gathering of some gang all decked out in colors. Like they were literally everywhere on the street, just hanging out and chilling like they were having a block party...maybe they were, but we got the distinct impression that we did not belong on this particular street and sort of got the
SirMOrgan . 2y ago I was on a date with a girl and we were talking about hobbies and I told her that I like to read fiction, and she said that if I stayed with her, she could help me fix that and mature beyond being able to like things that aren't real
smurfee213 2y ago Some other kids and I were looking for a spring we had heard about but instead of the spring we found someone's little weed farm. We heard a truck coming and took off running.
BarbellsandBurritos 2y ago Went to a party in high school, realized at some point I was all alone in the living room. It dawned on me that it was because everyone else was in the bathrooms snorting pills & heroin. And that was the first Irish goodbye in a long career of them.
SnakeHandlersHands 2y ago Worked at a call center in college, the call-you- in-the-middle-of-dinner-and-ask-for-money type. Had a shift lead pull the team aside during a break for an inspiring pep-talk wherein he told us if you get a sad old lady on the line who has nothing to live for and is about to off herself... at least get $15 from her before she hangs up. Walked out.
Cheap_Doctor_1994 2y ago Took my college roommate to a party at a coworker's house. Not other college students. At one point, the mood changed and I realized these were NOT my nice, loser coworker. We left. Not ten minutes later, there was a huge fight, stabbings, swat team, at least 1 dead, 10 hospitalized. Coworker wondered why we left. Made me much more aware of how little we know about people we interact with daily.
Popcrornshopgirl 2y ago 2002 ish , me F29 doing computer shit in my office in Chicago during a heavy snowfall. I step outside for a smoke. It's cold and snowing like hell but the parking garage next door is dark but open so I step in like a foot. 2 big dudes come out of nowhere and say they're parking lot attendants. Every hair on my body stood up. I ran into the street as the guy grabbed my jacket. I've never told anyone that story. I'm super street smart but that day I made a bad decision. They were definitely
RuyiJade 2y ago Sitting next to a huge floor to ceiling window in food court when the drizzle of rain turned into a heavy downpour. The wind picked up from next to nothing to howling and hail started falling. I grabbed my stuff and tugged on my mom, shouting we need to move. We did and maybe five minutes later, a huge tree chunk hit the window. It cracked it but didn't shatter (100% sure it was tempered glass), but still. Not the place to be.
2y ago I was taking a photo of somebody on the beach with a distant thunderstorm rumbling. When I looked at the photo, I realised her hair was starting to stand up. Time to get everybody to the car ASAP!
Picard2331 2y ago Was hanging out with my friend from high school, asked if I wanted to go to his other friends place for a bit and play some old N64 games and smoke some weed. Hell yeah, sure! Get there and the place looks like a crack den with the dudes girlfriend just absolutely knocked out on the couch from what he said was ketamine. Then they left to go buy heroin. So the dude left some random stranger (me) alone in his apartment with his unconscious girlfriend. I just left and drove home soon as I saw them
humanityisconfusing . 2y ago When I realised that someone I loved and trusted had stripped the wires on my oven and tampered with my smoke alarms.
ComplexPackage117 2y ago Highschool best friend i hadn't seen in 10 years asks me to go to dinner with his gf we hop into his car. Не stops along the way while i stayed in passenger seat. Unbeknownst to me, he was selling pills. Got into an altercation with a guy he was getting money from. 10 minutes went by he comes back to the car grabs a pocket knife and gives it to me. Says Ok, if that dude says anything flip that out Dude comes out of apartment. They start yelling at each other. I put the knife
BigNorseWolf . 2y ago Hey, was that second cleaner amonia because the first one we used was... THUD Eyup. Come on. Out we go.
a 2y ago I was laying on my bed on the third floor of a very old rickety guesthouse in Kathmandu, Nepal, when a devastating earthquake hit. As the building was being tossed from side to side I felt a sense of self-preservation I've never experienced before or since.
KaiBarber69 2y ago 2nd time i smoked weed, at a house party. Just got that sense that something wasn't right. Sat on that feeling for a while, then got an overwhelming feeling that i nust needed to get out now. I just needed to leave, something was going down. Turns out I was just high and paranoid. But as soon as I got outside, I felt at ease, and hungry. I demolished 3 subway footlongs on my 30 minute walk home. So all was well that ended well.
notheebie 2y ago Company Christmas party. | was asked a work question and realized by the time | started talking I couldn't even remember the question | was so drunk. Snuck out like a fox haha
2y ago | was building a cinder block wall in the winter in Canada. We had the area tarped off with a salamander heater running to keep us warm. One day I noticed my eyes were starting to burn so I looked over at the guy I was working with and asked if he felt weird in any way. When he looked at me | realized he was squinting and so was I. We were maybe 20 feet from each other. Needless to say we killed the heater and got outside the tarp. I wasn't in the mood for
