Lorde's New Single 'Solar Power' Was Likely Inspired By Larry David's Vacation Home

Ahh, Larry David. The mastermind behind Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld, notable, albeit distant, cousin of Vermont Senator, Bernie Sanders, and one of the many muses behind Lorde's new summery single, “Solar Power"? Yep. In a story that sounds straight out of a bizarre game of celebrity Mad Libs, It seems the actor's influence and artistic genius may have struck yet again in shaping another pop culture masterpiece – or, well, at least his Massachusetts vacation home.

“Well, I remember I was on Martha's Vineyard with my good friend Cazzie, staying at her house," the artist recalled of writing the track in a new interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe. Although Lorde didn't specify which Cazzie she was specifically referring to, it is more than likely that she was referencing the daughter of the famed Martha's Vineyard-vacationing screenwriter, as over the past few months, the pair's friendship has been highly publicized, the artist even sitting down with David for Interview magazine last November. 

“We had just been for a big swim all day, my hair was wet and I came back into my room, I had my little Yamaha DX keyboard, and I just started singing 'my cheeks in high-color, overripe peaches,' and kind of figuring this thing out," the singer continued. “I was like, ‘what is this?’ … it almost felt like ‘Rock DJ’ to me, the Robbie Williams song. It was like, 'I don't know what's going on here, but I love it.'”

Although she ultimately ended up putting her work on pause in favor of a paddleboarding excursion –  and perhaps some Curb Your Enthusiasm reruns and a nice whitefish and caper cream cheese-filled bagel – the artist picked back up where she left off after returning from her trip and reuniting with Jack Antonoff, the powerhouse pop producer behind “Solar Power” and some of Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey's latest albums. “We had all the windows open, it was summer, we just followed it through,” she explained. 

Despite finishing the song with Antonoff, the singer maintains her time on Martha's Vineyard – likely at Larry David's vacation home –  played a significant role in shaping the track. “It really was such a natural, joyful extension of an awesome day," she said. 

However, it seems the vacation home wasn't the only influence that inspired the song, which perfectly straddles the line between certified banger and Activia commercial soundtrack. In the interview, the artist also cited screaming cicadas, whose calls are sampled in the final product, and “Loaded" by Primal Scream as some of the piece's biggest influences. 

So folks, here's to hoping that Larry David returns the favor, allowing the singer to inspire his latest work – Lorde Your Enthusiasm sounds amazing.
