The dumb babies are back! Nearly 17 years after we last bid adieu to Tommy, Angelica, Chuckie, Susie, and of course, Phil and Lil, the Rugrats gang has reunited -- and are headed to Paramount+. In a Wednesday Twitter thread attempting to hype ViacomCBS's streaming wars entry (can someone please just invent a digital cable plan already?), showcasing their offerings, including RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 6 and new Avatar The Last Airbender content, Paramount+ announced the nostalgic revival of the 1991 series, complete with a brand new trailer.
"#ParamountPlus is bringing back your favorite babies: The Rugrats. The new series features the original voice cast with an updated animation style," the post reads, featuring a 55-second teaser. Swapping out the show's quintessentially '90s animation style for a weirdly smooth CGI update, the trailer transports us to a modern version of the Pickle's pink abode, where the six babies are watching their beloved Reptar cartoons on a flat-screen TV. Angelica, evil as always, calls over Chucky, interrupting the T-Rex's prime time saga to ask him to play a game entitled "be my Jonathan" -- a.k.a the assistant to Angelica's businesswoman mother.
"I have been trying to be more adventurous lately," Chuckie says nervously before the eldest Rugrat demands him to fetch a secret box of frosted animal crackers hidden "behind the Hanukkah stuff" in their pantry, sparking an intense Q and A session about the sweets' exact locale, ending with Finster asking what, exactly, is a pantry. Some things never change -- even over the course of 30-odd years, a trait that seemingly sparked network execs to bring back the series for their streaming venture.
"Rugrats is one of the most iconic cartoons recognized by fans around the globe, and this original version is one we are taking great care and pride in creating for a brand-new audience," Nickelodeon Animation's president, Ramsey Naito, explained in a statement. "Having the voice cast behind these special characters come together is one of the essential pieces to making the show recognizable and we can’t wait to watch this talented group bring them to life again."
So, folks, as annoying as these nostalgic streaming war tactics may be to us consumers, remember -- A baby’s gotta do what a baby’s gotta do -- and sometimes, a baby’s gotta do a cash grab reboot.
