Ya'll still here? Okay good. Huh, I can't believe that worked. Anyways, as implied through my admittedly terrible Rickroll fakeout, the iconic '80s music video once used to terrorize our unwitting friends into seeing Rick Astley's smiling face is back and more uncomfortable than ever. Earlier this month, a YouTube channel by the name of Revideo gave us the "Never Gonna Give You Up" revamp that absolutely no one asked for, posting a 4k 60 FPS remastering of the old-school viral music video. The result? A bright, high-def rendering that looks, um, a little too crisp for comfort.
The subtle glow behind Astley during the church performance scenes has transcended beyond the soft light of stained glass, painting a strangely pious saint-like aura around the pop artist. The dancers' sweet Footloose-y moves now look eerily precise, as if they're rendered on a pixel-by-pixel basis, well, because they are. Hell, the entire video no longer looks like it was shot on location in various parts of London's Borough of Harrow, appearing as if Astley and his producers bought a cheap green screen on eBay, cast some local dancers, and called it a day. Rick Rolling has come a long way from Macy's Day Parade performances and the "pick your Rick" paper fortune teller I made in high school, where each prediction read some variation of "Rick Astley will never give you up."
Amid this creepy meme-y reboot, several Twitter users flocked to the platform, to say how unlike Rick Astley, the revamped video did, in fact, let them down, noting Astley's HD similarities to a European comic star ...
... its fear-inducing crispness --
... and even comparing the entire video to a bad camcorder school project.
However, their musings point to a larger question at hand -- do they actually dislike the new remaster or are they just salty they Rickrolled themselves in 2021? Anyways, even as technology evolves, times change, and memes fade in and out of vogue, there's one thing we know for sure -- no matter what, Rick Astley will never give us up, let us down, run around and desert us, make us cry, say goodbye, tell a lie and hurt us.
