Mysterious Monolith Spotted In Southern Utah Wilderness

If you had a giant monolith appearing out of nowhere 2001: A Space Odyssey style on your 2020 bingo card, you're in luck. Last week, officials from Utah's Department of Public Safety were in for a massive surprise while helping out the state's Division of Wildlife on a helicopter journey to count bighorn sheep, running into a mysterious metal structure planted in the middle of the terrain.

"That's been about the strangest thing that I've come across out there in all my years of flying," pilot Bret Hutchings told NBC-affiliated KSLTV of his team's potentially humanity-altering discovery. "One of the biologists is the one who spotted it and we just happened to fly directly over the top of it, he was like, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around!' And I was like, 'What?' And he's like, 'There's this thing back there -- we've got to go look at it!'"

... the team made a beeline, er, helicopter line to the structure, where they proceeded to touch the giant metal slab, climbing on each other's shoulders to reach its top. "We were kind of joking around that if one of us suddenly disappears, then the rest of us make a run for it," Hutchings said. Although they didn't vanish or report experiencing some giant existential transition, the pilot has a few theories of what this structure could plausibly be -- presuming it's manmade."I'm assuming it's some new wave artist or something or, you know, somebody that was a big 2001: A Space Odyssey fan," he said. Another proposed explanation? The massive rectangle is an instrument being used in an actual space odyssey. "We were, like, thinking is this something NASA stuck up there or something. Are they bouncing satellites off it or something?"

Considering they haven't disclosed the monolith's location, afraid unexperienced explorers getting lost in the vast southern Utah wilderness attempting to find it, the world may never know what, exactly this structure could be. But in the meantime, I'll be keeping an ear out for space vacuum-breaking ringing noise and eye out for for a giant baby floating next to our planet. It is 2020, after all.
