It turns out that the "Man in Black" (whom I presume to be the man in the black tunic from about 150 years ago), is actually Jacobs enemy, who took the form of the smoke to kill Jacob, and then was the "ressurrected" Locke. Also, the ash everywhere is to protect jacob from the monster. SPOILER ALERT!!!
