I have never understood why in a TV show or movie when someone is calm and then freaks out for no reason people find that hilarious. It has been done a billion times, over and over and over. It is tired and not funny.
The joke is that the split-screen phone conversation thing that movies like to do doesn't have any real-world connection. They're reacting how you probably would if half of your worldveiw suddenly disappeared behind a blown-up image of the person you were talking with. This is especially evident when he throws the phone and it bounces off the apparently physical wall.
