Just The Facts
- Nickelback is a rock group whos bland mix of heavy guitar and grunty vocals have lead them to fame on pop music charts.
- Nickleback was formed in 1995 in the Canadian town of Hanna, Alberta.
- Nickelback achieved their first pop success in 2001 with the song "How You Remind Me", Canadians have been apolagizing ever since.
The Origin of a Musical Legacy (of Crap)
In 1995 in the town of Hanna, Alberta Chad, Brandon and Mike Kroeger, brothers, and their friend Ryan Peake decided to form a band that would mix the heavy distorted guitar of hard rock with the gritty heart felt vocals of grunge to make a sound that would pollute pop and rock radio stations for years to come.
Tired of Hanna, Alberta, in 1996 the band would relocate to Vancouver, British Columbia. What Nickelback found was success with the single "How you remind me" in 2001, and what they would leave behind was according to Cracked forum member Jeth, a "town full of imitation bands they've left in their wake".
How did the Kroegers come up with a name like Nickelback? That is explained in the article The 25 Most Ridiculous Band Names in Rock History.
Commercial Success
Nickelback found their first success with the song "How you remind me". This hard rocking ballad found popularity among rednecks and middle-aged soccer moms. The song topped pop charts. The band would then use "How you remind me" as a formula to create their next hits, interchanging subject matter with things like photographs, today being your last day, and, oh yes, wanting to be rockstars.

The Nickelback songwriting method
Don't believe it? Check out this video, it will play "How you remind me" in one ear and "Someday" in the other.
Using this formulaic pattern Nickelback has managed to sell a whopping 30 million albums and are the second best selling foreign act in the U.S. just behind the Beatles. Admit it, you just lost some faith in humanity.
Reception and Criticism
Most critics were able to call Nickelback out on their bland and repetitive nature. On Nickelback's 2005 release All The Right Reasons, Tiny Mix Tapes said
"Like all Nickelback releases before it, All The Right Reasons was made for all the wrong ones and follows all the formulas and clichés you should be bored to death of by now"
Despite critical lampooning, Nickelback has been nominated for 5 grammys and won 12 Junos. Junos are the Canadian music awards and are considered quite prestigous meaningless.

"Nickelback has a really pretty voice" - Mother's on Nickelback
Nickelback has made fame by selling to a demographic who is happy to listen to what the radio stations tell them to like. A casual audience who approves of the familiarity of formulaic rock has garnered Nickelback a fanbase that crosses the globe...
...except Portugal

See, Nickelback might be bland and uncreative, but why exactly does that make them the worst band now? Listen to Brokencyde, there's a bad band.
ReplyYeah, I still don't get it. I like Nickelback because I simply enjoy the sound of their music, and this article hasn't done anything to explain to me why I should hate them like the rest of the whole f*****g internet.
ReplyPortugal may be the single most intelligent country in the world.
ReplyBelieve it or not, there was a time when Nickelback wasn't the worst band ever. Before "Silver Side Up" (the "How You Remind Me" album), they recorded & released two (count'm TWO) studio albums, and I consider their 2nd album "The State" to be one of the best hard rock albums of the late 90s. It featured "Leader of Men" if you recall that single. It's raw, meaty, fast-paced, and features some very solid guitar work from Ryan Peake. Make no mistake, it's Nickelbacky, but it's like they all of a sudden stopped making music for chicks. Too bad I had it before "How You Remind Me" and could enjoy it untainted. Now, it just might be too late for "The State." A shame.
ReplyTheir pre-success decency is so ignored that the Topic doesn’t acknowledge its existence. I might need to start a conspiracy theory that no one will believe just to get the word out.
you shouldnt describe an album as "Raw and Meaty" and not be surprised to have someone question your sexuality.
I don't hate Nickelback; I like a few of their songs, but seriously, that video was effing hilarious.
Replyi found the way they got different celebs in rockstar (kid rock, eliza dushku, gene simmons, dale earhart junior as well as making it seem like women or children were singing in deep voices) was actually pretty damn funny. the video for this afternoon is also every dude's wet dream.
I loved it. Good job on not jumping straight on the "I hate Nickelback" bandwagon, I don't think I would have been able to.
ReplyHanna is a hellhole. To be stuck in Hanna is a curse I wish only on Nickelback
ReplyI like nickelback but ROTFLMAO this is hilliarious
