King Ghidorah is a three headed mutant/dragon from space who hates Japan almost as much as it deserves.
I love giant monsters, almost as much as I love robots.
Reason #1 why I love Evangelion
Well, since I was a lad, I've been watching Godzilla films, and I love'em all (even the 1998 version). While Godzilla will always be my favorite monster, Ghidorah is still just as awesome. Hell, years ago, when I still played Game Boy Advance, I had Godzilla Domination, a fighting game with like 6 kaiju, one being King Ghidorah. He could spam the shit out of everyone, and is the first character I beat Mecha King Ghidorah with.
Ghidorah, doing said spamming, on himself. Very confusing.
The first King Ghidorah
Since his first apperance in Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster, King Ghidorah has appeared in six movies, as regular ol' King Ghidorah. About nine, if you count his other incarnations. This is way more than any other Godzilla enemy.
King Ghidorah is pretty much the biggest monster in the line-up. About 150 meters, giving him a good 50 to 70 meters over Godzilla himself. He likes to crash to Earth as a meteor. He can fly, of course, and like many other flying daikaiju, he can produce "hurricane winds." He also has his world famous "gravity beams" (see first picture).
He kicks ass. So much, that Godzilla has only defeated him single handledly twice.
Lets commemorate this awesome monster by giving a quick look at his filmography.
This is the golden age of King Ghidorah. Not only is he introduced, he also displays his best work.
Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster
In his first film, he comes to Earth in a meteor. Then he ravages the countryside. Mothra convinces Godzilla and Rodan to stop fighting and combat this new threat. They agree and it takes their combined force to defeat Ghidorah. Not a bad start.
Invasion of Astro-Monster (Godzilla vs. Monster Zero)
Directly following the last movie, King Ghidorah has been plagueing an alien planet, called Planet X. The Xilians who live there ask a group of astronauts to bring Godzilla and Rodan to their planet to battle Ghidorah. But, the Xilians where in control of Ghidorah all along and gain control over all three monsters. The monsters attack Japan (of course), but the control over the monsters is disrupted. Godzilla and Rodan drive back Ghidorah, and save Japan again.
Destroy All Monsters
After losing control of all the other monsters earlier in the movie, the aliens known as Kilaaks unleash their secret weapon: King Ghidorah! This is Ghidorah's best display of awesomeness. It takes not one, not two, but ten daikaiju to defeat him. Sadly, he is killed...
Godzilla vs. Gigan
Or so they thought!
In this film, aliens from the planet Nebula M decide to colonize Earth. They send their monster Gigan and revive King Ghidorah to destroy all life on Earth. But Godzilla and his buddy Anguirus come and save the day again.
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Most erotic Godzilla poster ever.
This is Ghidorah's most embarrassing origin story. Rather than being a mindcontrolled alien warbeast, in 1991's Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah he was created by mutating a trio of futuristic pets, called Dorats.
This is the part where you shit yourself in fear.
This is already disheartening, but it is made worse by the fact that this film is the one where Godzilla whoops his ass. Not only does Godzilla beat him, he rips off one of his damn heads. And, just when you think this Ghidorah couldn't fail any more, they drop this shit on you...
Fucken Mecha-King Ghidorah.
Later that same movie, he shows up again as a cyborg. Admittedly, this is Ghidorah's most badass form. However, he still fails. Hard. Even powered the fuck up with Godzilla fighting weapons, and actually having Godzilla restrained with cables to absorb his power, Godzilla just blasts him away. Godzilla beat him twice, in the same movie.
Rebirth of Mothra III
Greatest DVD cover ever.
In this film, King Ghidorah battles Mothra as Grand King Ghidorah. This Ghidorah is a huge leap forward in bad motherfuckerness. First he destroyed the dinosaurs, which is already a crime against... well... the universe! Then, when he comes to Earth, he begins to go after children for food!
He's like Nega-Gamera.
Mothra, unable to beat him (no surprise there), pulls a dick move and travels to the past to fight a weaker Grand King Ghidorah, before he destroyed the dinosaurs.
Million times better than some tiny cat-dragons.
At this point, I am not sure who to root for.
Anyway, Mothra beats the young Ghidorah, but a piece of his tail regenerates and Grand King Ghidorah still exists in the future. Luckily, Mothra gains some new power and defeats Grand King Ghidorah.
Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Oh... hi Baragon.
The most controversial role of King Ghidorah ever. Instead of a destructive alien war-beast, he is one of three guardians of earth. In this film, it's implied that he's supposed to have eight heads, meaning that this could potentially have been the most powerful Ghidorah ever. But, this Ghidorah technically killled himself by energizing Godzilla with his gravity beam, so, y'know, what-the-fuck-ever.
He is accompanied by Baragon and Mothra to do battle with Godzilla. They all fail, but they use their spirits to possess Godzilla, and allow the Earth forces to destroy him.
Also to note, the Ghidorah is this film is the smallest, standing a measly 49 meters.
These Ghidorahs, while still are Ghidorahs, only kinda look like him. They aren't really true King Ghidorahs.
This big, black behemoth is Desghidorah, or Deathghidorah. Appearing in Rebirth of Mothra, he's like King Ghidorah's big brother. He destroyed life on Mars and then set his sights on Earth. After Desghidorah battled the inhabitants of Mesozoic Earth and Mothra, he was locked away, but was released in present time. He killed Mothra, but her son, Mothra, became an even more powerful Mothra and imprisoned Desghidorah once more.
"Charles, why are you showing us Megatron? He doesn't look a damn thing like King Ghidorah!"
In Godzilla: Final Wars, Godzilla battles fourteen different monsters controlled again by the Xilians, as this film is the ending of the Millenium era and was almost the ending of Godzilla. Period. This all-out monster brawl of galactic proportions ends with Godzilla battling his greatest opponent Monster X.
Monster X pretty much beats Godzilla's ass. They lock beams and create a huge explosion. Godzilla is knocked back, but then looks up and sees Monster X transform.
Fuck you Godzilla.
This is Keizer Ghidorah. Say hi. He pretty much destroys Godzilla, and even begins to drain the life force from him. But, with an energy boost, Godzilla blows off his middle head, and rips the other two to shreds. With the beast defeated, Godzilla gives one final roar to close out the era.
