There is no single way of defining atheists. Apart from arrogant. And hellbound.
Technically, and atheist is one who has spat in God's face by believing that He does not exist. God is rumored to be a bit pissed off with this.
Being an Atheist has it's down side.

There are a lot of honest dialogues and debates between the two that are ignored by sensationalist on each side. They've ended up converting each other some times. Check out Lee Strobel and the American Atheist Association.
Most intellectual Atheists actually only say that Christians are not guilty of anything, but it doesn't discount their ignorance about the world around them. Being a sort of atheist myself, I think it's important not to mistaken a Christian with a fundamentalist. Christianity currently does not do any harm to the world and Christians themselves don't hurt others for their own interests any more than we do. What you describe is the militant/ignorant branch of Atheism that simply uses the logic of "If I can't see God, then He isn't there."
To be truly Atheist should make one apathetic to religion instead of bashing it constantly and blatantly like some do.

The only reason a majority of people are religious is because it's been shoved down their throats all their lives. And quite a few religious people are douche bags too, just look at Jehova's Witnesses or Mormons, the two most annoying groups of people on this entire planet.
Bear_boxer, surely you can't sit there and say that a majority of atheists are just as pushy, condescending and dogmatic as religious groups? I completely agree that there is nothing wrong with atheism, but... a lot of atheists do try and shove their non-religious beliefs down people's throats. I've witnessed this myself numerous times. I even had a couple friends who claimed they thought less of someone if they were religious. I know plenty of science professors, doctors and psychologists that are both atheists and religious. They know how to separate their personal beliefs and their work. Science and God can go hand in hand. You should check out the movie Contact. It's based off a novel written by Carl Sagan. It really showcases the importance of balancing the two and how both can be progressive in different ways. As long as you keep your banter to yourself and stop shoving your opinion, whatever that may be, down someone's throat, then it's arbitrary as to what you believe and do not believe in.

Contact isn't about that at all. The character of the preacher is a framing device, not a lecture on ontological empiricism. Don't take my word for it, read anything Sagan wrote in response for the plans for the movie, which had been stalled several times during his life.

ReplyBecause I'm certain them being atheist had more to do than them being communists. Hitler believed in God and he killed millions too. Faith has no bearing on if a person has morals or ethics. Perfect example, me, I've never stole, never engineered a mass murder, and never attacked a religious person because they believe and I don't. Many popes have acted immorally. Most atheists, like most people in general, act morally. Perhaps not in christian or religious morals but they rarely do things like kill or steal, just like everyone else. So STFU and stop making connections where none are to be had. It's like saying rising CO2 levels are responsible for increasing crime levels. I guess what I'm trying to say is you believing does not make you any better than me and my not believing does not make me any better than you

Yep you disagree with it therefore its wrong. Thats the well reasoned open-minded arguement that makes atheists better than theists. But seriously look at what many top scientists say they believe its possible they're just no convinced by it.

My view is the only truth" And may I say that view is pretty much EXACTLY like religious people hate. The same people they criticize to NO end.

To be fair, while you have not, many, many, many theists have killed in the name of their belief, while the number of atheists who have killed specifically because of their lack of fair probably numbers around 4. Not an excuse for being jerks, but it does balance out the fundamentalists (who are worse; they are more apt to send death threats).
