Gorillaz

The Gorillaz are an animated band from England. Their music uses a range of genres, including Trip-Hop, Hip-Hop, Alt-Rock and Electronic.

Just The Facts

  1. They are the brain child of Blur member Damon Albarn and comic artist Jamie Hewlett.
  2. 50 Cent really doesn't like the, giving you another reason to support them.
  3. Despite being cartoons, they are better than your band. Live with it.

Background

The Gorillaz have released 3 original albums: Gorillaz (2001), Demon Days (2007) and The Plastic Beach (2010). The actual music is a collaboration of many artists, with Damon Albarn being the only permanent member. The idea to make an animated band came when the two creators were watching MTV together. Hewett states, "if you watch MTV for too long, it's a bit like hell - there's nothing of substance there. So we got this idea for a cartoon band, something that would be a comment on that".

There are currently 4 members:

Murdoc 'Mudz' Niccals

Murdoc Niccals is a 40-something hooligan and self-proclaimed 'leader' of the band. He was raised by an
abusive alcoholic father and is a former speed addict. He also practices Satanism and is known for being quite misanthropic. His main influences are the likes of Black Sabbath, The Clash, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones; however, he is also fond of AC/DC, Syd Barrett and The Ramones. He frequently bullies 2-D and is just an asshole in general, but you love him.

Because he's fucking Murdoc, that's why.

2-D

2-D (real name Stuart Pot) is the lead singer of the band. He is called 2-D after he was hit (twice) by Murdoc while driving, which caused 2 dents in his eyes, making them black. He is around 6ft 2", and has very long skinny arms with large hands. He is constantly abused by Murdoc, and is only occasionally stuck up for by Russel, the bands drummer, just further teaching us something; don't fuck with Mudz.

Russel Hobbs

Russel Hobbs started off as a very promising child, attending the Xavier School for Young Achievers. However, he was forced to leave and fell into a coma after demonic possession caused him to attack several students. After 4 years, he was finally exorcised, and, unable to go back the Xavier's, he moved to Brooklyn, NY. During his time there, a drive-by shooting killed all of his friends, whose spirits inhabited Russel's body. His best friend, Del, is the most prominent demon and manifests as a blue rapping ghost in several videos. Over the course of the bands existence, he has grown to gargantuan proportions.

He is especially defensive of Noodle, and occasionally stands up for 2-D when Murdoc bullies him. However, he still abuses 2-D every now and again.

Noodle

Born in Osaka, Japan in 19090, Noodle is the youngest member of the band. She mysteriously turned up in a Fed-Ex box outside the Gorillaz HQ, only knowing one word in English: Noodle, thus gaining her stage name. In 2003, after increasingly bad dreams, she returned to Japan only to find out that she is part of a government super soldier experiment, the other subjects of which were destroyed, and she is capable of using any gun or musical instrument and is a master of all languages.

In the El Manana video, she appears to die after the Lighthouse is shot down by helicopters. However, it is later revealed that this was a part of Murdoc's plan to kill Little Jimmy Manson, a psychotic dwarf obsessed with either loving of killing him. He ensured that the two would start up a new band after Noodle was killed, but turned the tables on him by locking him in the lighthouse without a weapon and gave Noodle the one parachute.

Despite her escaping, she was lost in Hell later, and in the Stylo video she is portrayed as an android.

Rise of the Ogre

Rise of the Ogre is an autobiography by the members, delving into further detail about their origins and current affairs.

It is 304 pages long and extensively illustrated. If you are interested in learning more about the Gorillaz, I suggest you buy it.

Or he will fuck you up.
