Just The Facts

  1. Sublime formed in Long Beach, CA
  2. Their mascot, Lou Dog, is the coolest mascot to live.
  3. Whoever says their song "Santeria" sucks should shove a glass jar up their own ass.
  4. Sublime was the happy equivalent to mopey grunge band Nirvana.

Members

Brad

Bradley Nowell was Sublime's lead guitarist and frontman sice the band's inception. Music was a big part of young Brad's life, as his dad was fond of Jimmy Buffet and played guitar at family gatherings. Somehow not embarrassed by either of those facts, he and his father and uncles played for hours. He was actually insanely talented and was able to play a song almost perfectly after hearing it only once. He was married to Troy Dendekker and had a son named Jakob, which are awesome names because they have the letter "k" instead of the letter "c" in them.

This guy knows what I'm talking about.

Sadly, though, Bradley threw it all away after he died of an overdose of heroin on May 25, 1996. Interestingly, in an interview with Rolling Stone, wife Troy said that Nowell was very happy and pleasant to be around when he was under the influence of herion, but added that he could be very difficult when not under the influence. Hm, sound like someone to you?

Damn you, Courney Love and your mouth herpes >:(

Bud

Bud Gaugh, born Floyd I. Gaugh IV (this sounded too Britishy, so he changed it simply to "Bud") was Sublime's drummer, longtime childhood friend of bassist Eric Wilson and Brad's "drug buddy." After Brad died he was in a few other bands, most notably Eyes Adrift with bassist-turned politician Krist "Baldy" Novoselic of Nirvana.

Eric

Eric Wilson was Sublime's bassist and Bud's longtime friend, mentioned above. Next to maybe Geezer Butler and Flea, he's one of the greatest bassists ever, as far as bassists go. Seriously, though, he gives the band and awesome bass line, almost like a porn groove, only cooler and not as trashy.

Lou Dog

Lou Dog was Sublime's living, breathing mascot. He was Brad's pet, and therefore allowed to wander around the stage and bite people attending the show. Lou Dog was often on the covers of albums, shirts, and even mentioned in lyrics. Lou Dog passed on September 17, 2001.

Early Days

Sublime played its first gig in a small club on the 4th of July, starting the "Peninsula Riot" in Harbor Peninsula, which led to seven arrests. They recorded a demo tape called Jah Won't Pay the Bills, which led to their successful debut album, 40 oz. to Freedom.

This album showed how important art was to the band. Also: weed.

When the album was first released in 1992, it recieved mixed reviews, but it is today revered as genius and was certified multi-Platinum. It combined many elements of Jamiacan music with American and British music while having lyrics based on Date Rape, pot smoking, malt liquor, etc., with a few covers and original tunes. Bud wasn't able to do most of the drumming, mainly because he was too busy tripping balls to do so.

Robbin' the Hood was Sublime's second album, and as you can tell from the cover, it had low production value (a majority of it was recorded in a Long Beach crack house). This was better recieved by critics and set up Sublime's biggest album to date:

Sublime was released two month's after Brad's death and was the most popular, timeless, and well-recieved among fans and critics. It is now 5x Platinum and almost every song on the CD is played on the radio today. If you haven't listened to it, go listen to it, or else your parents will call you up and tell you that you were supposed to be a failed abortion.*

* This may or may not happen, but I'd just play it safe and listen to the album if I were you.

Future

Most would love to see Sublime touring again. Others would say it wouldn't be Sublime without Brad, and that the band died with him, as Nirvana died with Kurt Cobain. However, rumor has it that Bud and Eric met a guitarist simply known as Rome (sounds like a douche to me, but what the hell) are allegedly releasing an album in 2010. However, there's a catch, as there always is. Bastards.
