Elliott Smith

Just The Facts

  1. Elliot Smith was a singer/songwriter, most popular in the late 1990's.
  2. He fit the archetype of the "tortured musician" perfectly, right down to the drug abuse and the death under mysterious circumstances.
  3. He may very well have been the most depressing person in modern times.

Early Life/Career

Elliot Smith was born Steven Paul Smith on August 6th, 1969, in Omaha, Nebraska, to parents who apparently believed that "boring is better" when it comes to naming children. His parents divorced about a year after his birth, and he went to live with his mother in Duncanville, Texas. Smith would go on to have a very bad relationship with his stepfather that may have involved sexual abuse, or as that's known in writing circles, "comedy gold."

He started playing the piano at the age of 9, and at 10 he started fooling around with acoustic guitar. At the age of 14 he moved with his birth father to Portland, Oregan, where he joined his first bands, Stranger Than Fiction and A Murder of Crows.
