  3. Don Johnson went on to design his own brand of Scarab speedboats after using them in the show

Overview

Miami Vice was a cop action drama that ran from 1984-1989. It pushed the envelope on cop dramas, and got away with murder for its time. Issues such as hardcore drug use, prostitution, murder, gang violence, and even slave trades were tackled in it. While "Vice" seemed to paint Miami in a dark and realistic light, the show actually drew popularity and tourism to the city. It also helped kick off some of the most prominent 80s fashion. Episodes were known for ending in one of two manners, either a very emotional scene involing the death of a guest star who had been around for that episode only, or a very close to being homoerotic hug, handshake, slap on the ass from Tubbs to Crockett or vice versa. Despite it being a "cop show" the number of arrests versus the number of murders against the bad guys, probably puts Alex Murphy post Robocop reboot as a better law enforcer than either Crocket or Tubbs, and let's not forget about the other Detectives. In essence with all the shit they pulled on this show, Miami Vice was the Shield about 25 years ahead of its time. Although instead of Vic Mackey wearing a leather jacket and staring at people and beating them half to death, Sonny would shoot them and then promptly steal the drug lord's woman.

The "badge" gets it: Much like Star Trek and its running gag of a Star Fleet officer wearing red as an indication that the character wouldn't be around very long, if anyone every showed off a badge on Miami Vice, and then went along on a bust, drug deal, stakeout, or entered into a donut shop, that character was sure to bite it.

Characters

Don Johnson-Det James Sonny Crockett. Sonny is a man's man undercover cop who lives on a boat (the St Vitus Dance) with his guard gator, Elvis. Sonny severed two tours in nam and has a reputation as being a former Gators quarterback. Sonny married a woman named Caroline and had a son named Billy. The pair separated prior to the pilot, and the show opens with Sonny having an on/off again romance with fellow detective Gina, as well as the idea of Sonny and Caroline getting back together. Season 3 starts a story arc with Sonny's greatest foe, Frank Hackman. In a flashback it shows the events leading up to Sonny and Caroline's separation due to Sonny's dangerous life on the streets and his "beginning" to go over the edge.

In addition to being an undercover Det, Sonny spends most of his time in his alter ego of Sonny Burnette, a drug runner known for his fast cars, flashy suits and las a faire attitude. Burnett drives a black 72' Ferrari Daytona Spyder, later a gay white 86' Ferrari Testarossa, and has a Stinger speedboat (later Scarab). He is also tied to living on the Endeavor Sailboat (the St Vitus) Although Sonny is regularly seen around Miami in either persona, the bad guys usually have a tough time figuring out that he is in fact a cop. Sonny struggles with living a double life and foreshadowing as to whether or not he will go over the edge is hinted at throughout the series.

After suffering a tragedy in season 4, Sonny does indeed assume the full time mantle of Sonny Burnett, when he comes down with amnesia. Remember this was 1987, that story arc was relatively new back then. Just when all hope seems lost, Crockett regains his memory and rejoins the side of good, where knowing is half the battle, and the other half is murdering bad guys in cold blood.

Philip Michael Thomas -Det Ricardo Tubbs: As one of the most prominent black/white cop pairings, Tubbs serves as the other half of this dynamic duo. Tubbs comes down to Miami under the guise of Raphael Tubbs from the NYPD pursuing a man named Calderone, a known Columbian drug lord. Sonny is put on the case when one of his men is killed and the two are forced into an unlikely partnership. By Lt Lou Rodriguez. After finding out Tubbs is impersonating a dead NYPD officer, Crockett finds out that the man he is working with is none other than Ricardo Tubbs, Raphael's brother out for revenge. After the case is momentarily settled Sonny suggests a more permanent partnership by inquiring "You ever consider a career in Southern law enforcement?"

Tubbs is a great character because he is the usually the element that keeps Sonny in line. Just when you think he is a huge pussy, he has a stand alone episode, nails an insanely hot broad, and has some serious shit happen to his character that makes you question why he's such a good guy. Tubbs drives a light blue 64" Caddy de Ville. Much like Crockett's Burnett, Tubbs often masqueraded as Ricardo Cooper, a wealthy buyer from out of town. Strangely he was often times fingered as a cop, while Sonny ran around blatantly and was almost always believed to be Burnett. Tubbs becomes a rouge cop for one episode in season three, where it is later established that he was undercover all along, but couldn't even tell the likes of his dept. This unbelievable storyline has been redone time and time again, most recently in 24's season 3 when Jack goes undercover…again with the Salazars.

Some of the horrific things that happened to Tubbs include:

-murder of his girlfriend

-murder of his son

-murder of his brother (pre pilot)

Saundra Santiago - Det Gina Calabrese: Named after a language of Southern Italy, Gina is a tomboy lady cop with 80s hair and fashion to boot. She started out the series "comforting" Crockett late nights on his boat while things fell apart with his wife. Although they broke off their romance, Gina remained his close friend, and is often seen caring deeply for Sonny's well-being and his whereabouts. Gina is used in several undercover stings usually as a hooker. Gina drove a red 71" Mercury Cougar convertible.

Gina's time to Shine:

Olivia Brown -Det Trudy Joplin. Known around the office as Trudy "the Booty" or "Big Booty" she played the role of the sassy black lady cop, who isn't afraid to get tough with thugs. Like every character, Trudy has an episode or two focusing on her. Later in the series she has a really lame encounter with aliens and James Brown, but we just look the other way on that one.

Michael Talbott -Det Stan Switek: If Crockett and Tubbs were Butch and Sundance, Switek and Zito were Shaggy and Scooby. Together with his partner, Larry Zito, the pair spend the majority of the series in a surveillance van, and occasionally making low level busts while assisting Crockett. They serve primarily as slapstick. Despite the fact that one or the other makes reference to an occasional girlfriend, it is unknown if the pair ever "hooked up." In season 3, tragically Zito is killed while on the job in a really lame angle, involving the plot to Rocky V or something, and Switek rises to the challenge of avenging his partner. Later he becomes a miserable gambler and an alcoholic because the show gets really dark. Poor Stan. Switek drove a turquoise 63' T-bird. He and Zito drove a Dodge crap van for surveillance.

John Diehl -Det Larry Zito: Zito is Switek's better, and thinner half. He doesn't have a huge role until the 2 part "Down for the Count" in which he is killed off at the start of it. They end the storyline while taking a shot to Zito's memory. He is mentioned casually during the remainder of the series.

Edward James Olmos -Lt Marty Castillo: Castillo is brought in as a replacement for Lt Lou Rodriguez. Remember to be head of Miami Vice, you must be some form of Hispanic. Castillo is most known for standing around and looking somber, even when the rest of the cast is overjoyed at something. He has what would have been the perfect "Batman voice". Christian Bale seriously should have taken notes. Castillo often offers little to absolutely no support for the supporting cast. Whenever they risk their lives, jobs, or lives of innocents he is famous for saying things like "they knew the risks involved." Castillo's backstory is that he served with the DEA in Nam. During this time he fought against the corruption of the DEA. He is also known for having some serious ninja skills, and being able to kill people Rambo style. This is brought out later in the series.

Cars

The death of the Spyder:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkJvfET2-L0

Due to the makers of the car being pissed that the Spyder was not in fact a true Ferrari, but a modified 1980 Corvette C3 with a Spyder body, the show killed off the car in favor the much lamer Testarossa. The Testa was originally black, but after Don Johnson crashed it in a test run, they had to repaint it white. This car remained standard for the rest of the series.

Boats

Setting

The setting was 1980s Miami. The main characters would often yell "Miami Vice!" or "Metro-Dade County Police!" Miami is part of Dade County, but was renamed Miami-Dade County following the show's cancellation.

Styles

The bright colors, pastels and things like wearing a t-shirt under a suit jacket were all made popular by the show and primarily by Don Johnson. Initially Johnson was opposed to the fashion trends for the show and wanted to portray a cowboy look.

Music

Miami Vice was famous for featuring really gay pop music, and portraying it in a manner that it was cool. These happy tunes usually played over scenes of graphic violence, or extreme suspense. The most famous scene of this is from the pilot, and corresponds to Phil Collins' -In the Air Tonight.

Episode Guide/Arrest Record

*This guide is designed to give you an overview of episodes as well give an actual arrest record (few were made in the show, usually the antagonist was just killed often accidentally) Despite being the greatest show ever, some episodes are god awful, and will be marked as such.

"Brother's Keeper/Pilot" In the pilot episode Raphael Tubbs a NY homicide det makes his way to Miami in pursuit of a drug lord name of Calderone. He meets ex college athelete and all around pretty boy badass Crockett. Of course the pair dislike each other but reluctantly work together. It is revealed throughout the course of the episode that Crockett's marriage is in ruins and he lives mostly on his bitchin boat the St Vitus Dance. He also regularly bangs his co worker Det, Gina on it.

Just when everyone is taking a liking to Tubbs it is reveals that Raphael Tubbs was killed a week ago by Calderone. BUM BUM BUM. Ricardo Tubbs comes clean that he is in fact the brother of the aforementioned murder victim bent on revenge. When he gets his chance he doesn't take it, and we have one arrest. Of course Calderone makes bail seconds later and leaves in the sea skimmer. As will soon be a trend on Miami Vice the ending happens in over the top joy and gayiety with Tubbs saying "I think I'll pursue a career in Southern law enforcement"

Rating: *****

"Heart of Darkness" Al fucking Bundy guest stars as an undercover cop who just might have gone over the edge. This is a warning and illusion for Crockett's other persona that of import/exporter Sonny Burnett. This episode is also quite possibly the basis for Poison's "Fallen Angel" video. Ed O Neil plays Artie, the over the edge cop in question, who at the last second sides with C n T and goes apeshit on the bad guys. Everyone is promptly blown away and as Artie is arrested, he later kills himself.

Arrests: 1, but he kills himself about a scene later.

Rating: *****

"Cool Runnin'" The start of the slapstick buddy cop teamups and street wise-crackin informants. In this episode Crockett's wife wants to divorce him, but that's the least of his problems. Taking a bet with two never before buddy cops, C n T vow to make more busts, and get paired up with an informant named Noogie. This turns deadly serious when major Jamaican players get invovled. They blow away 1 of the other 2 buddy cops and Crockett almost catches a bullet. The wounded cop survives, Noogie is shot but survives cause he's the fuckin Noog man.

Arrests: 0 everyone gets blown away

Rating: **** for the Noog man

"Calderone's Return: Part 1 - The Hit List" Calderone the guy from the first episode is back to tie up loose ends. This includes wiping out Crockett. The Crockett's trying to give things another go are put under heavy fire and moved to a safe house. A kickass montage plays of Tubbs racing to get to the house in time. This episode leads into the next with an Argentinian assassin in custody. We lose Lt Rodriguez (everyone's boss) in this one.

Arrests: 1

Rating: *****

"Calderone's Return: Part 2 - Calderone's Demise" Well the fucking title kinda gives it away, but this one is definitely worth watching. Having faked Crockett's death they head to the Bahamas to flush Calderone out of hiding. There they meet a mysterious woman close to Calderone that Tubbs falls for...and bangs the hell out of. Only after he has explained that Calderone killed his brother do they find out she is his daughter. Tubbs attends a party to collect "his" bounty on Crockett and a shitshow emerges. Guess who dies?

Arrests: 0 everyone is blown away

Rating: *****

"One Eyed Jack" Crockett has a friend with a gambling problem and he and Tubbs somehow get mixed up in it. This all ties to a known businessman and reputed mobster Al Lombard. This episode just sets things up for the rest of the season. Also it introduces Castillo.

Arrests: 1, but they let Lomard out shortly thereafter

Rating: ***

"No Exit" Crockett gets mixed up with an arms dealer who is deadly abusive to his wife. The wife has had enough and pulls a Farrah. Also there's arms deals regarding Vice City style rocket launchers.

Arrests: 1, but his wife kills him a second later

Rating: ****

"The Great McCarthy" A drug smuggler is also a speed boat aficionado. Crockett takes his boat to the race and of course comes in first. In the meantime Tubbs gets invovled with a woman who might be in debt to the aforementioend McCarthy. The whole plot revolves around a reputed small timer named Izzy. While the actor who played Izzzy appeared (And was offed) in the pilot, Izzy will remain a staple character throughout the rest of the series. Tubbs must turn in the woman he is falling for since she is guilty...of murder!

Arrests: 2

Rating ****

"Glades" Crockett and Tubbs head to the sticks to track down Joey Bramlete. Bramlete is involved somehow with major Columbian drug dealers that have his little girl. In a ewok type battle he and his treefolk rise up against the bad guys.

Rating: ****

"Give a Little, Take a Little" Wow where do I start? Paulie (Burt Young) from Rocky plays an evil pimp. Crockett has an informant named Rickett (lol) he goes to jail for rather than give up. The Noog man is back. Gina goes undercover and fights a pimp/assassin named Trick Baby, and then she shoots Burt Young.

Arrests: 0 go Gina!

Rating *Noogman* (each letter in "Noogman" counts as a star)

"Little Prince" After a Noogiriffic episode this one is kind of a let down. Trust fund baby gets mixed up with drug dealers, but it's really all his dad's fault. That's about it.

Arrests: 1

Rating: **

"Milk Run" A bunch of kids get mixed up in big time drug dealings. Someone gets killed in the process, and C n T play babysitter to keep the kids alive. This is the first time the running gag of a coin flip for Crockett and Tubbs is used. Crockett's little buddy for the episode is killed at the end. This is also the first instance where Castillo spends 83% of the episode sulking and talking like Christian Bale Batman.

Arrests: 2 but they are let go and star as the main players.

Rating: ****

"Golden Triangle: Part I" *It should be discussed that there are certain episodes in which Castillo's past is briefly explained, alluded to, or someone "asian" shows up. These are all five star episodes and invovle some serious Ninja Shit on the part of Edward James Olmos...and his mustache. It is also alluded to that Castillo trained the man who will grow up to be Jack Bauer when he was four years old. This is obviously explained by the man who will play George Mason later guest starring.* This is one of these episodes. Watch it.

Bunch of shit happens, and they fail to inform Olmos that "thai men" are invovled. This angers him greatly. Then a subplot involving General Lao Li is introduced.

"Golden Triangle: Part II" Castillo w/o a suit, as super ninja Castillo. And Noogie!

Connecting to Vice City

The hit video game, Grand Theft Auto Vice City is based off of 3 things:

GTA VICE pic

Miami, Miami Vice, and Scarface. Pretty much every single story mission of Vice City correlates to an episode, or story element of a Miami Vice episode. In this section we will connect mission destinations to episodes of the hit series. You can also find Crockett, Tubbs, and occasionally Switek and Zito on your tail in Vice City.

"Brother's Keeper/Pilot" GTA connection "Intro/Rub Out" (note the intro of GTA is about Lance Vance wanting revenge for his brother's murder. Lance Vance was voiced by Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas)

"Heart of Darkness" GTA connection, many parts of Starfish Island and Vice Point, no specific mission

"Calderone's Return: Part 1 - The Hit List"

"Calderone's Return: Part 2 - Calderone's Demise" GTA connection "Intro"

"One Eyed Jack" GTA connection "Jury Fury"

"No Exit" GTA connection "Waste the Wife"

"The Great McCarthy" GTA connection "Checkpoint Charlie"

"Glades" GTA loose connection Exploder: Evacuator Part 2 (though it is obviously based on Rambo)

"Give a Little, Take a Little" GTA connection, this one is actually more akin to a GTA III mission, but for this article's purposes, "Recruitment Drive"

Season 2

"Tale of the Goat"GTA connection "Juju scramble"

"One Way Ticket" GTA connection "An old friend"

Season 3

"When Irish Eyes Are Crying" GTA connection "Guardian Angels" (the mall and rockets)

"Stone's War" GTA loose connection "Check in at the Checkout/Loose Ends"

"Viking Bikers From Hell" GTA connecton "Messing with the Man"

Season 4

"Contempt of Court" GTA connection "Jury Fury"

"Amen...Send Money" GTA connection It is poossible that Pastor Richards (and his statue to save you) is a parody of this episode

"Death and the Lady" GTA connection Porn Studio asset missions

"Like A Hurricane" GTA connection "Autocide"

"The Rising Sun of Death" GTA connection, this is more closely tied to GTA III and the second island

"Vote of Confidence" GTA connection "Martha's Mugshot"

"Baseballs of Death" GTA connection "The fastest boat"

"Mirror Image" GTA connection "The chase/Phnom Penh 86' "

Season 5

"Hostile Takeover" GTA connection "Rub Out"

"Redemption in Blood" GTA connection "Keep your friends close"

Additional Elements:

At a 3 or 4 star wanted level, a "Cheetah" with two undercover cops will begin chasing you. In most cases the cops look like Crockett and Tubbs, but on occasion two white cops (Switek and Zito?) can be seen. If you steal this vechicle, you can take it into a pay n spray/garge and you may use it for Vigilante mode.

A mission has you entering the metro dade police station (in washington) to retrieve a cop uniform and release a prisoner.

"Crockett's theme" plays on EMOTION

The spinoff Vice City Stories, features two specifically named cops with a parody on "Crockett and Tubbs"

Where are they now?

Don Johnson- After winning a golden globe for playing Crockett, Johnson's career kinda went downhill. He went from doing things like designing speed boats and racing Ferraris, to starring in Nash Bridges, another cop show. He had a song writing career with hit single "Heartbeat" He also nailed Streisand and released a single with her called "Til I loved you. He remarried Melanie Griffith and had child with her. He is married to Kelly Phelger and has 5 children. Sadly as of 2008 Johnson was seen being Elvis levels of fat. Yes, THAT Elvis. He also came dangerously close to losing his home and was 15 million in debt. He got busted a few times, including once that was almost a huge money laundering case. It turned out to be misinformation and he got off.

Philip Michael Thomas- Thomas after Vice began a career of made for TV movies and being a spokesman for phone companies. He also was associated with the Philip Michael Thomas psychic hotline. Thomas lent his voice to the top selling video games GTA: Vice City, and later Vice City stories. In it he plays character "Lance Vance" who is essentially the persona of Ricardo Cooper.

They did attempt to reunite Johnson and Thomas on Nash Bridges as partners, but the show and the storyline never took off. Thomas also tried a music career.

Edward James Olmos: Olmos went on to turn down the role of Captain Jean Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Instead, he received a best actor nomination for "Stand and Deliver" which was recently parodied by South Park

He starred in Selena with J-Lo and was seen in the Snoop Dogg video "Vato"

He is currently old as fuck and still directing things.

Saundra Santiago: Went on to play on soap opera "Guiding Light". She was recently seen as Jeannie Cusamano and as you would guess is still incredibly hot.

Olivia Brown: Brown starred on Designing Women, and played a character on 7th Heaven. She has guest starred in a few films.

Michael Talbott: mainly appearing in movies prior to Miami Vice, Talbott's career was relatively quiet after the show.

John Diehl: Once again connecting two incredible shows, Diehl went on to become the dirtiest player in the game, Chief Ben Gilroy on the Shield.

This topic does not pertain to the 2006 theatrical release at all. Although both Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx make ok movies, "Miami Vice" was not one of them. It had nothing to do with the show, and should not be viewed by anyone.
