Burger Time

BurgerTime was an arcade game released in 1982 by Data East. In it, you play a chef who must create sub-par diner fare while breaking a few eggs, stomping all over your ingredients, and peppering the hell out of anything that moves.

A dignified death.

Just The Facts

  1. It's one of those games that you remember fondly, hunt down on eBay, recover your old systems from the basement, and dust off the NES to play, only to wish you had ordered Mega Man instead.
  2. The chef's name is Peter Pepper, which is only slightly more unique than his antagonists' names, Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Egg.
  3. Ports and sequels include Super BurgerTime, Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory, Diner, and, I shit you not, The Flintstones: BurgerTime in Bedrock.
  4. Versions are still being made today, most recently, BurgerTime Deluxe is available for the iPhone.

Building a Better Burger

To play BurgerTime, you must guide Chef Pepper across the length of an ingredient until it falls. Just like they do at Burger King! Usually, an ingredient will just fall to the platform below, and if it happens to land on another ingredient, that ingredient will then fall as well, and so on. However, if you have an enemy on your ingredient when it falls, it goes further. Once all of the ingredients are stacked on the plates below, you're off to the next level!

Mr Hot Dog, Mr Egg, and Mr Pickle

The enemies can be temporarily paralyzed with a shot of pepper, which Peter has in limited quantities. Why pepper immobilizes his foes rather than simply make them delicious is unclear.

He can get more pepper shots by collecting bonus items that appear in the center of the level. One might naturally assume that the bonus items were perhaps peppercorns or a pepper shaker at least, but in a world where breakfast tries to kill you as you assemble lunch the size of a split level home, one should never assume. Extra shots are obtained by collecting coffee, an ice cream cone, or French Fries. Obviously.
