Death metal is an extreme form of heavy metal, and is essentially an off-shoot of the '80's "thrash metal" trend made popular by Metallica and Slayer. Taking their cue instead from second-teir thrash bands like Venom, Hellhammer, and Kreator, death metal pioneers Death, Morbid Angel, and Possessed set out to create a brand of heavy metal guaranteed to make you and three of your buddies the scariest dudes in your junior high school.

Cracked Talk on | Death Metal
This is intended to anger people that listen to this music, instead I think you're just making yourself look like a prick. By the way, no-one ever says "brutal" anymore.
Yes they do.
The fuck!? Mastodon isnt death metal.
The guys I know who still haven't out-grown death metal consider Mastodon to be death metal.
Mastodon made forays into Grindcore in their earlier albums, but have since embraced a far more thrash and progressive-influenced sound. Their most recent offerings are far from death metal, but to call some of their earlier work DM wouldn't be too far from the truth.
yeah i get it now i just listened to remission
Oh God, according to your picks I'm guessing your one of those insufferable people who went through a "phase" where you liked death metal. There is nothing wrong with any of the bands on your list, and you've included several of the cornerstones of the era, but its a genre that has continued to grow and flourish since you lost interest in it. Check out "Inis Mona" by Eluveitie, or pretty much anything by Insomnium, Mors Principium Est, or Equilibrium from the last five years.
I lost interest because the music stopped being interesting.
