Death Metal
Death metal is a subgenre of heavy metal. It usually employs varying tempos, heavily distorted guitars, "blast-beat" drumming, and deep growling vocals. Hasn't been taken seriously since around 1993.
Just The Facts
- Death metal is the bastard child of Black Sabbath and several heavy doses of PCP.
- Death metal will scare the living shit out of your parents, priest, and pets. Everybody else - not so much.
- Ready for the party to be over, and for everyone to go home? Put on a slab of the most brutal, punishing, unlistenable death metal you have. We suggest something by Impetigo.
Bleeeeeeaaaaaaauuuuurgh!
Death metal is an extreme form of heavy metal, and is essentially an off-shoot of the '80's "thrash metal" trend made popular by Metallica and Slayer. Taking their cue instead from second-teir thrash bands like Venom, Hellhammer, and Kreator, death metal pioneers Death, Morbid Angel, and Possessed set out to create a brand of heavy metal guaranteed to make you and three of your buddies the scariest dudes in your junior high school.
It's not all bad

As much as I love death metal, I have to agree with this article.
Replysepultura is not DM you dumb s**t
ReplyYes they were, guy.
They kind of were, actually. Death/Thrash :P
Pretty meh article...also, Grindcore >>> Death metal (I do love Old-school DM and some other DM though). And Terrorizer don't fit in with that chart because they have good lyrics (and for those not in the know both them and Carcass are/were Grindcore)
Reply Hide All See All 3 RepliesAgreed about the chart (which is kind of wrong BTW), the article (all the fan thing is so wrong, because I love OS metal, and Mastodon isn't Death Metal) and Terrorizer/Carcass.
No mention of Gorguts, Cynic, Suffocation, Immolation, Incantation, Demilich and Atheist anywhere on the article? D:
I think that Death > Grind. I like both, but I like death metal more. Especially the tech/prog bands, great stuff. Just my opinion tho.
Napalm Death's Harmony Corruption album was not grindcore, in my opinion of course. The music was too death metal to be grind at all.
Reezhyro, you are in fact correct, but their more grindcore albums are the most classic and the best ones :P
Well-written article. Thank you for dedicating your time and effort to raising awareness of how awesome death metal truly is.
ReplyWhen I clicked "view all comments" I got an ad for "Kill the Client - set for extinction. Nineteen tracks explode like IED's and spread with the subtlety of sonic napalm!"

Also, AAAAAARGH SATAN SATAN GUUUARGH GRGLGH GRRRR UUURG GYAAAH SATAN GRRR GRGL LRGL GRRR AAAARG!!
Okay, I was starting to think you didn't know your s**t until I saw the covers of War Master, Necroticism, Left Hand Path and World Downfall there. YESS.
ReplyWorld Downfall!
Funny...but Mastodon are not Death Metal. Also, I'm all about extreme music (punk/hardcore, metal, noise rock..), but I hate 99% of death metal. Death, however, were awesome, and most old school DM was decent at least.
ReplyI fuly agree with you
This article was aight, I had a "lol" or two. But if you are looking for monetary success, I would start a metal-core band. As I Lay Dying seems to be doing pretty damn well, and they aren't even that good.
Replyyep, it's all pretty much true haha. but death metal is awesome cuz of how it sounds, and no one appreciates the work that goes into it.
Replyalso, you guys forgot to put Cannibal Corpse's "Butchered at Birth" and "Tomb of the Mutilated" on the classics chart.
ReplyButchered was an over-produced mess. Tomb had exactly two good songs on it. Just my opinion, naturally.
yep, this entire article is death metal in a nutshell.
ReplyDeath's Human album is about none of above, and the article is a bit superficial. It'd be true if the article was about grindcore or noisecore though. Even then, there are bands such as Napalm Death who are as old as your grandpa, and bitchslap you with their political lyrics.
ReplyYou're on a comedy site.
Alright article, but not all Death Metal is crap, Melodic Death Metal is pretty amazing. My favorites are Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquility and Skyfire. One thing about this article I WILL say is this: It seems like you were trying to piss off Death Metal fans- but you should know that not all of us are posers, and don't listen to it because it's brutal. Granted, I'm Atheist, but I listen to Death Metal because that's what I perceive to be good music. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
ReplyI concur. I am likewise Atheist and I definitely do enjoy brutality in music. I don't however care what anyone thinks because their opinions are okay with me. I don't have any problem with anyone liking what they like or thinking of me however they will. I love old school Death Metal. I think a lot of newer bands and bands of other metal genres are brutal and amazing as well. Some of my favorite (metal) bands are Beyond Creation, Opeth, Severed Savior, Cattle Decapitation, Suffocation, Disma, Brain Drill, Anomalous, Cryptopsy, Satyricon, Wintersun, The Black Dahlia Murder, AND A DAY TO REMEMBER!!!!!!1
I guess this was slightly funny (if at all), but somehow the insults are seemed to be targeted towards 12-15 year olds that think they're "br00tal" (which by the way KIDS do say that). Some of the bands listed are very lame and definitely not enjoyed by most people who listen to death metal (such as cannibal corpse which sucks).
ReplyCannibal corpse doesn't "suck," but they're definitely not the best.
im in 7th f****n grade and listen to Death metal people do say brutal . i dont know why . but my favourite kind is melodic death metal but everyone i knows thinks its scarry odd thing is preppy cheerleader girls like me.i like cannibal corpse dethklok (if that counts)and most of tyhe bands you mentioned but no black metal im atheist but that shits just stupid. also im in a metalcore band so i probaly seem like a posser.
ReplyThis is intended to anger people that listen to this music, instead I think you're just making yourself look like a prick. By the way, no-one ever says "brutal" anymore.
ReplyYes they do.
I assure you that they do.
The fuck!? Mastodon isnt death metal.
Reply Hide All See All 3 RepliesThe guys I know who still haven't out-grown death metal consider Mastodon to be death metal.
Mastodon made forays into Grindcore in their earlier albums, but have since embraced a far more thrash and progressive-influenced sound. Their most recent offerings are far from death metal, but to call some of their earlier work DM wouldn't be too far from the truth.
yeah i get it now i just listened to remission
Oh God, according to your picks I'm guessing your one of those insufferable people who went through a "phase" where you liked death metal. There is nothing wrong with any of the bands on your list, and you've included several of the cornerstones of the era, but its a genre that has continued to grow and flourish since you lost interest in it. Check out "Inis Mona" by Eluveitie, or pretty much anything by Insomnium, Mors Principium Est, or Equilibrium from the last five years.
Reply Hide All See All 3 RepliesI lost interest because the music stopped being interesting.
@ Skinnymojo: Who the f**k ever talked to you?
You're high. Take a nap. And never wake up, please.
Mors Principium Est f*****g SLAYS.
You would have thought that someone who liked death metal, had an open mind, didn't confuse death metal with black metal etc etc would have wrote this rather than you. You could have at least made it funny!
ReplyYou're high. Take a nap.
you left out the bands Necrophobia and Extreme Masturbation. Heh heh heh.
