Also, is it bad form to call photoshop on some of these? They seem a bit too weird. That penguin one especially looks like something someone's doctored up. Most of them are incredible but two or three seem a bit off.

This makes me happy in a really melancholic way - fuck you, Health & Safety, getting all official and ruining everyone's fun.

As for the possible photoshops, I think it's important to remember that with photography being a new
technology (or, at least, newish for those who were able to afford it once it was made avaliable to the public) there was a lot of experimentation going on anyway. Mirrors, playing with light, collages, nothing really new in terms of techniques and not anything magicians hadn't been using since forever - but totally rejuvenated in this context. So people got a wee bit obsessed and really, really good at it.

Also, I think it's totally possible somebody would have a pet penguin in a world where hockey teams wear swastikas, nurses look on at kids riding gurney chariots, and serial killers have their own beauty pageants:

There's actually a cast photo from Freaks on the site too. In fact, I was a little annoyed by it because most of the rest of them are obviously found photos, but that one is just a promotional still.
